location of windlass

I know this has probably been elsewhere, but am asking as cant find anything through searches, too many are coming up

Am looking at fitting new my windlass, and am looking at setting it slightly off set from centre
this is a vertical winch
so needs the hole through deck and due to deck design I dont want to cut through the central steel in the deck but to put the windlass hole to the side
The anchor will be to one side anyway so I would not have thought this to be a drama
Ideas are most appreciated, as sounds like a number of people have their winches offset from centre

Yes it is quite normal and in many situations the only way. The chain/rode must pull straight in line with the bow roller. If it pull to one side, the chain/rode will ride over side of the roller.

You should try for the longest chain drop that you can arrange.

I found that chain will slide down a 45 degree slope.

I used a trailer roller on Boracay to hold the chain away from the windlass (Arco) gearbox to get a "clean" fall.

A Vertical axis windlass can be mounted off centre and offline.
A Horizontal windlass must be mounted at right angles to the line of pull.

Boracay, how did you set your one up
my main concern is there is a stiffening rib down the long axis of the boat in the peak and I want the winch to sit to the side of it so as not to interfere with the strength in the prow
To get a long drop is good, but would need to modify either the hatch to the anchor well - deck mounted, or to place to the side of the hatch

looks very interesting
I went with the manufacturers recommendations and went for the larger size
I have enough room in the anchor locker as it is quite large, and has alot of depth, so that is not an issue either
will check volumes properly later this week

I was on a cat that had the winch centered, and ran both anchors that sat on the crossbeam. If your winch will let out, and retrieve. Then being centered may be a choice for you. Especially if you have 2 anchors mounted on the bow.

Thanks for that, am looking now that the winch has arrived at what to do with the anchor hatch, it needs to be moved and resized as it is in the way
I might centre it as the layout allows for that nicely and am looking at being able to run two anchors
