Lido 14 safe in driveway?
I couldn't think of any other place to put this topic!
We are planning on buying a used Lido 14 with trailer, and keeping it in the front driveway. Is this reasonably safe? What are some measures we can take to make it less friendly to boat thieves?
Thanks

Re: Lido 14 safe in driveway?
Get a trailer lock. Various types that lock the tongue so you can't hook it up to a car.
Or put a chain through the wheel and around part of the trailer so it will lock the wheel from turning.
Or chain the whole thing to a tree or post.
Or put the trailer at the end of the driveway and park a car behind it.
Or take the tires off and sit the trailer on blocks.

Probably hugely dependent on where you live.

And that's a fact. Some of the neighborhoods I've lived in you may as well give it to the thieves the first day and save yourself the wait and worry.

Its going to depend on your demographics. But luckily sailboats arent stolen as often as tinnies and powerboats.

The more of a hassle you make it to use the less often you will use it. I would get it insured for its replacement value and put a tongue lock on it.

Park it in downtown Detroit or Chicago... no one will know what it is! Phil

Re: Lido 14 safe in driveway?
Given recent events, I'd suggest a locking boat cover.

Re: Lido 14 safe in driveway?
We really have to know where you live in order to help you on this one. Even then its hard to say because a high crime area can occur in small sectiions of an otherwise safe neighborhood. An easy to remove stainless chain through the wheel, around the frame and attached to something solid would do it in my neighborhood. Easy to remove but hard to break.
kind regards,

Re: Lido 14 safe in driveway?
Tongue lock on the trailer and if it's me, I'd consider a beefy padeye on the bow with a big, visible, high-quality cable lock running through it to the trailer.
Bottom line though- if somebody really wants to take it, they probably will be able to.

Re: Lido 14 safe in driveway?
All the suggestions will keep an amateur thief at bay, but a pro will win out.
But, the good news is that damn few thieves, especially pros, will be interested in a Lido, so I bet that vandalism would be a bigger risk than theft... and much harder to prevent.
Good luck, and enjoy your Lido. Very similar to my first boat, an O'Day Osprey. Had a lot of fun and a few scares in that boat!
Cheers,
Jim

Not knowing anything about where you live, it's impossible to even guess if your boat will be safe in the driveway, but even if it appeared to be safe, there's always that one exception.
There are several ways to attempt to secure a trailered boat and you would probably do better to join one of the trailered boat forums and ask your question there.
Remember also, in many neighborhoods (including mine) there are restrictive covenants that would prohibit keeping a boat on a trailer in the front driveway. It would pay to check on this before you buy a boat and then find that you have no place to keep it.
Back to the security question, you could go to the local police station and ask them for advice. At least they are in touch with crime in your neighborhood.
