Re: joining 2 anchor rodes

I think you're using the term "rode" incorrectly. The rode is the combined length of chain + nylon + anything else.

I would not chose to anchor on a rode where the nylon sections were tied together or spliced.

A long splice is as strong as the rope it is in.... Properly done!

Re: joining 2 anchor rodes

I'd eye-splice bot ropes and connect with a shackle. They can be spliced together fine as long as its a long splice and uses the full thickness of each rope, i.e. don't thin the ropes down to make the splice smaller to fit a winch etc.

I would have someone else do the splices becasue I have forgotten how and my recent ones were revolting!

Re: joining 2 anchor rodes

Watch long splices in laid ropes in a anchoring winch situation. If you get any spinning action that could unlay the rope and the splice. It's unlikely that far in as described in post 1 but it is possible. Especially in the softer rope auto rope to chain winches like.

Used a standard short splice but but a couple of extra tucks into it. Then stitch it as a back up. That far into the warp, or indeed Rode if you include the chain, nice call Bash , the stitch should be more than enough to counter any common sort of spinning.

And as usual, don't do it then forget it. Casting your eyes upon it occasionally may save surprise grief later.

If you use the gear on a anchor winch taper and reduce the splice out as you would the rope to chain one and you'll find it should go through the winch just as well.

If the warp is a multi plait (octiplait) just do a short splice and reduce/taper out and all will be fine. Multiplaits are non-rotating so even if it spins up the splice can't unlay.... or if it does go bash your splicer around the ears as they have made one huge cock-up.

Re: joining 2 anchor rodes

Don't use the long splice on anchor rodes made from modern materials. All modern materials are too slippery and the splice will not hold under repeated stress. If you do splice the two lines together use the short splice with six or more tucks. Then sieze the splice. But Eye splices in each bitter end and shackled would be a better course of action.
But then I'm a retired Navy BoatswainMate who have made thousands of splices... But what would I know. But for the fact that NONE of My SPLICES have Never Pulled Out.

Meaning, that they’ve ALL pulled out.

Why would TWO eye splices (AND a shackle) be preferable to a single long/short splice?

I don't know why I said that. May I retract my 2 x i splices and go for the Short Splice?

A long splice does not increase the diameter of the spliced ropes, and thus will go through any block that the original line will go through. A short splice essentially doubles the diameter.

In the case of splicing an anchor warp, the short splice would be stronger and far less likely to fail in use.

Cheers,

Jim

One in nylon or polyester spliced properly they are fine but in some of the newer materials I agree with you for sure, some of them are slipperier than a politician in election year, if that is indeed possible.

Re: Joining 2 Anchor Rodes

I'm not sure how comfortable I'd be in an anchoring situation, but when joining 2 ropes together for other purposes I have used bowlines on the ends joined loop to loop and they have held fine. In a pinch that's what I would do. Dave

Re: Joining 2 Anchor Rodes

Does the OP want to permanently attach the two sections of line? If so, a splice is the best way to go. I do think that getting a new length of line is better than splicing together two old lines. A good splice is extremely strong though.

If on the other hand the second line is to be only occasionally attached (when anchoring in deeper water than usual), two eyesplices on thimbles and a shackle is easiest. In this case you can use an oversized shackle to join the two thimbles so the shackle won't be the weak link.

If you don't want the permanent eyesplices, a Carrick Bend is a decent knot for joining the two lines (actually, it's a bend, not a knot). It might be tough to untie though.

Based entirely on reading, I have also heard that a proper short splice is about 90% as strong as the rope itself. For overnighting I'd be more worried about the hook slipping than the rope breaking.

Bearing in mind the impact of a thicker diameter of course.

I came across this plaited splice video a while back. Never tried it, but it is worth discussing / trying if necessary.
