Is this old CQR worth putting money into?

Hey Team

We have an oversized Mantus anchor as our primary which we love and it works a charm, but we also have a smaller old CQR which we never used, just hanging on the bow of our 37ft boot as an extra.

I was wondering if this old CQR is worth any $$$ investment to give it more love (replace the swivel bolt - not sure of the correct name) and sanding it down and re galvanize it all? (or something else?)

Or should we consider this secondary anchor is "dead"?

In lieu of buying a new secondary, refit the CQR.

If it was me I'd sell it as is & buy a better anchor. Hot dip galvanisers will require it to be sandblasted if they are thorough..

If you are in Columbia your choices may be limited. I would put this tired workhorse out to pasture and replace it with one of the modern anchors, if you can acquire one. If not, any backup is preferable to no backup.

It really comes down to budget. But personally, I'd much prefer to upgrade this anchor to a modern design and get rid of that old CQR. W.R.T. budget - if you are anchoring, how much do you consider your boat worth? Really, should you skimp on an anchor that could make the difference between your boat being safe or not?

Just an opinion, but where availability and $$ are limited, and if you are willing to accept the limitations of the CQR, keep it and use it and learn where you cannot trust it. We have friends whose CQR suddenly kept failing to stay set, and did the repair on the hole, that was wallowed out from years of use, and then re-galvanized it. They are still using it, and once set, it rarely drags.

If money is no object and you have good availability, then, sure, go for one of the new generation anchors. They are fearfully expensive to ship, and so you'll really have to pick from what is available in Colombia...and still can use the CQR for emergencies, or to loan someone in an emergency. Many people carry a number of "spares." There is no shame in that.

I have painted anchors with two part marine epoxy. When I had some left iver from another project I would just slobber it on the anchor. I ended up with green anchors them being coated with high build zinc epoxy primer. That would cure the “galvanizing” issue. Or you could use POR-15 to similar effect.

OTOH if possible I would get a new secondary. Perhaps a Fortress or Danforth if money is tight.

Maybe you could bring a new Fortress back in your carry-on next time you come back from home leave?
Not that silly an idea - see the piccy - that's a 25kg Rocna under that bubble wrap - OK so it went in the hold and not the cabin.

My old CQR? I traded that for sexual favours a few hours work on my self tailing primaries in a local Chilean machine shop.

Sand it, use liquid galvanize paint, and use it as a spare. Years ago it is was in the best. And held my boat in severe weather for years of cruising.

Consider it dead. Definitely not worth putting any money into. Save your dollars and put them into a newer design or an anchor of a different design such as a hi-tensile Danforth. You should be able to find a good used Danforth and, in my opinion, the HT Danforth is a better option than the CQR.

Seems its pretty generally accepted this old (and very beat up) anchor isnt worth any extra $ invested into it. We'll keep it as is and start slowly looking for a different (new-er?) secondary to replace this rusty one.

I just took a 45# CQR to a consignment shop. He had quite a few smaller ones already with some on me good price in them. The shop owner said there was still a good demand for them.

I also dropped off a 45 pound Luke like new and a 70# brand new Luke. He said they would likely go as lawn ornaments.

Interesting- last time I was at Bacon sails consignment they had a sign that they were not accepting CQRs any longer.
I’d get another Mantus as it stores flat disassembled and doesn’t take long to put together.
