No kidding..
One time we had sailed to Key West and anchored in 20' of water:
Almost immediately we took the dink to shore, had to get some part at West Marine and wanted to explore a good place for lunch and future dinners.
While a West Marine a good size thunderstorm came over the town (and anchorage) and let loose with monsoon rain and 40-50 knot winds.
No way we could get back to the boat in those conditions: I was sweating bullets and hoping I had set the anchor properly. (2,000 RPM in reverse for 30 seconds was the usual setting procedure)
Being new to Key West we had no idea how the holding was, crossing fingers the Rocna 20kg and all chain rode would save the day.
It did, all good but I was nervous as ----- in church

I’d get another Mantus as it stores flat disassembled and doesn’t take long to put together.
I expected the same but no.

CSY Man,

125# Mantus.

Even then I have had issues a couple of times.

Once the anchor fouled, in Dehais, Guadeloupe. Wind made made the boat do a 360 over the anchor.

Another time the shackle pin managed to come out, even though moused. That was an interesting night. Apparently the mousing had been disturbed by the shackle getting caught on the roller support. Different style shackle appears to have fixed that.

Yeah, nothing or his grandmother is bullet proof.
I have also dragged once or twice with The Rocna. (Mud)

I always secure the pins, and try to double secure, need to sleep good...

(back in my lazy days I have been known to use cable ties to mouse the pin, it last a while in sand only, no rock or corals however)

I have never used a swivel however, don't trust them. (Internal corrosion)

Re: Is this old CQR worth putting money into?

If it’s a genuine, made in Scotland, CQR then by all means hang on to it.
I sail a 41ft heavy (10 tonnes cruising weight) westerly oceanlord and have never been let down by my CQR in mud, sand, gravel or clay. It’s all down to setting it correctly with adequate scope of heavy chain and a good haul back to drive it in!

Re: Is this old CQR worth putting money into?

I would use the CQR as is and not put any money into it unless you need your chain galvanized too. Years ago I had 250 lbs of anything re-galvanized for about $300. This covered a lot of chain and several anchors and a picnic table.
A consideration on the second anchor is what fits on the bow. I had a Rocna and the only other anchor I could fit was a Bruce. The CQR is supposed to be better than the Bruce (except on short scope) but not as good as the Delta and other more modern anchors. Use lots of all chain scope. I also carried a Fortress anchor disassembled for an emergency. I am selling this if this is of interest.

I've always found the CQR hard to set.YMMV
This is generally true of the smaller sizes of CQR but the size of CQR on a 37 ft boat would certainly not be in that category. The large sizes are vey good. That being said, I have a 8kg CQR on my Parker 27 (26 foot) boat and there is one spot in the Solent (Newtown Creek) where it is the only anchor I have found that sets first time. Everything else I've tried has been a thorough pain requiring multiple resets (sometimes a dozen or so). Newtown Creek is weed over a hard packed sandy bottom with a thin layer of soft mud (2~3 inches) I changed to the CQR after a fellow boat owner with a similar boat (Parker 275 - 27 ft) swore by it on his boat. As it happens, both our boats anchor lockers are designed for the 8kg CQR anchor.

That picture looks just like a CQR I abandoned in a marina once

Re: Is this old CQR worth putting money into?

I would always carry two anchors minimum when cruising or even just day sailing...

They are your hand brakes as well as your insurance, and without hesitation, I would take your oversized CQR to a galvanizing yard where they will sand blast it and hot dip galvanize it again... definitely worth the effort in my humble opinion

Spend the money on a Fortress for your backup anchor. Way lighter and can be carried taken apart.

Re: Is this old CQR worth putting money into?

You don't mention the weight of the CQR anchor so it's hard to decide on a repurpose of the anchor.

IF it is a light anchor say 25#, I would keep it as a lunch hook or a Kellet. I'd remove from the bow roller though.

Anchoring is an art which at times can require various tools.

Keep in mind that the more you can keep your rode (chain, line or a combination) on the bottom the better the anchor will hold, which is why when it gets stormy the ratio changes from 5:1 or 7:1 to something more.

On our trawler our anchor that came with the boat was a 25# plow type of anchor which was ok as a lunch hook. Our main anchor today is a 55# Rocna on 150' of chain & 250' of 8 plait. We carry the old lunch hook as a lunch hook, not having to break out the big anchor or to use as a Kellet and I also have a 20# Fortress on 15' of chain and 150' of 3 strand to use as a stern anchor if ever necessary. I generally keep the Fortress anchor separate from the rode so I can use it as a line off the stern to a tree.

Really depends on how, where & when you anchor.

Probably not worth spending any money on.

Good luck.

For a secondary, keep it. Wire brush it, light emory cloth in the hard to get places. Spray with 2 or 3 coat of cold galvanize spray. Then stow it till needed.

CQR anchors are as good today as ever.

I think they make lovely mailbox posts.

I was wondering if this old CQR is worth any $$$ investment to give it more love (replace the swivel bolt - not sure of the correct name) and sanding it down and re galvanize it all? (or something else?)

Or should we consider this secondary anchor is "dead"?
It doesn’t look that bad. You can clean it well and spray with a good silver rust protection paint, as it isn’t in regular use. A secondary anchor is always important to have. You never know when you’ll have a need for one - for multiple reasons.
