Re: Is 5/16" BBB large enough?

It would be worth removing the gypsy and finding the numbers stemmed on it.
An alternative is wrap the chain around the gypsy and see how it fits, but its better to do this over 360 degrees which is often hard with a horizontal windlass without removing the gypsy.

It is easy to measure the chain and see what you have got, but that is no good if its wrong.

Fix the foot switch. The windlass in an important saftey item on a larger boat.

i just spent 2 hours putting a bolt in that did not want to go in.
it held the main shaft that holds the gypsy. i would prefer not to take it back out

I know the type of problem all too well.
A good tip is take lots of photos, before touching anything and during disassembly. As well helping getting things back the way they should be you can use them to answer questions like where there any numbers on the gypsy?.

See its easy to smart with hindsight.

From the pix I'd say 5/16. How about using a small Crescent wrench as a caliper?

Calipers are pretty cheap and one would be very handy to measure rope, bolts, nuts, pipe, hoses, chain etc. You don't need a precision one. All hardware stores should have them.... Then you can get accurate measurements.

Well it's been a while since I rebuilt my Sea Wolf but I don't recall having to remove a bolt to get the gypsy off. IF I recall correctly, unscrew and remove the locking nut on the right hand side (just next to the rope drum). That will let you remove the rope drum, bushings, and such on the right side of the windlass which gives you access to the main shaft. You can then push the main shaft out the left side of the windlass by popping off the black, rubber plug on that side. Slide the shaft out through the hole under that plug, and lift the gypsy and clutch disks straight up.

BUT WAIT, THERE'S MORE!!!!

You don't have to do that to get the number off the gypsy. It is molded or stamped on the inside of the gypsy drum IE the side where the chain sits. Just release the clutch and rotate slowly and you will see the number right at the very outer edge of the gypsy. You might have to wipe off the dirt or corrosion to read the numbers but should be there. That will tell you exactly which chain the gypsy is made to take. NOTE: If you have the SL manual do NOT believe what it says in the manual about compatible chain. It is totally wrong.

Re: Is 5/16" BBB large enough?

measure the links on the chain and go to the specs and you can tell what the chain is. BTW... wrap the chain as far as possible around the gypsy.... see if it still fits in the gypsy on the last link... the differences are subtle sometimes. Are those two different chains? The pics show a very differnt fit in the gypsy...? One looks almost too big and the other doesnt fill the gypsy cavity...?

Re: Is 5/16" BBB large enough?

Just to compare, we have 3/8 BBB with #45 anchor. We are 34 ft at 6+ tons.

Scoobert, even if your chain looks like it fits, be sure to run at least 15 feet through the windlass. Sometimes poorly fitted chain to gypsy will work but will jam up every 5-10 feet.

Sorry if this has been said before.

the 5/16" chain we have now skips under load. it will wind 5' then skip two links, and again and again.

Re: Is 5/16" BBB large enough?

All nominally 5/16th inch:

Not all 5/16 inch chains are the same!

Peerless ACCO G43 has a inside link length of 1.03 inch x 0.5 inch wide and a wire diam of 0.329 inch
Peerrless ACCO G30 has an inside link length of 1.1 inch x 0.507 inch and wire diam of 0.342
Peerless ACCO BBB has a link length of 1.000 inch x .5 inch wide and wire diam of 0.328 inch
Peerless Boatman's Pride G30 has a link length of 1.1 inch x 0.507 inch wide and wire diam of 0.342
Peerless Boatman's Pride G43 has a link length of 1.03 inch x 0.49 wide and a wire diam of 0.33 inch

Campbell G3 has an inside link length of 1.1 inch x 0.5 inch and a wire diam of 0.34 inch

If your chain is domestic is should be one of these, if its an import it might be similarly sized.

With a pair of calipers and a micrometer you should be able to sort out your chain type. But you need take a number of measurements as the gal might have different thicknesses.

There is a considerable difference in these link lengths. I do not know your gypsy but vertical ones are more forgiving as they sometimes only 'take' 3 links (or 90 degrees) horizontal gypsies take lots of links as the chain wraps round about 270 degrees and any difference between gypsy and chain compatibility causes the chain to jamb.

Not being an American it seems odd you can have a gypsy simply marked as the 'nominal' 5/16 inch when there are a number of variations of 5/15th inch?!

The only, or safest, way to get the correct chain is to take the gypsy off and size it with the chain in the shop/chandler. Gypsies are inordinately expensive, almost as much as new chain (or they are in Oz!)

The other way around - horizontal windlasses take fewer links.
