One certainly can, after all the chain links are welded in the first place.
Sure, it's easier to use split links., even if they reduce overall breaking strain.
If one wants to know the actual braking point data go and get the link tested and find out the actual yield point and subsequent braking force.

I had my 10mm short link L grade chain tested and it failed at 4.5 t.
One most likely will rip out the cleat or samson post unless it's a steel boat.
So, use a good snubber.
