Fried windlass?

I hope this is the right place to post this.

I have a 24v Lofrans Project II on the bow of the boat with a separate battery bank in the bow. Everything was working fine on the heavy duty switches (waiting for 24v solenoids to arrive) but once I put the solenoids in, the circuit breaker trips. As suggested from Lofrans, there's a 70a breaker before the solenoids.

The ohm meter shows that the (+) (-) (+) on the motor have no separation. I'm no electrical engineer but would think that the two positives wouldn't show a connection.

Did the motor fry already??

How else can I trouble shoot this?

Re: Fried windlass?

It sounds like something is wired wrong now. Sleep on it and look it all over again in the morning and you'll probably see what's wrong.

Re: Fried windlass?

Wired up exactly that way Gord.

Putting the ohm meter on M1 and M2 shows zero resistance.

I'm going to put it back to how it was and see what happens.

Re: Fried windlass?

Could be shorted field coils, brush wires etc.. With disassembly you can test the different components. I just went through a starter rebuild and read all the tests that can be done with a multimeter, which gives a pretty comprehensive look at the current path.

Great with Fava Beans and a good Chianti......

sorry couldnt resist...

disconnect wires at windlass, measure voltage from each + to - when you activate the solenoids.

Direct connect makes things work so I've narrowed it down to the solenoid or the rocker switch.

So glad it's not the motor!

Re: Fried windlass?

The solenoids were wired backwards.
