chain testing

Hi, How do you know when to replace anchor chain? I have removed most of the rust and old galvanization but it is still pitted and may be original to the boat (30 years). Should I cold galvanize with a spray can and trust it? Is there a "test" procedure ? Thanks

Re: chain testing

Get new chain. Pitting is a bad sign and cold galvanized spray is not like the real thing. So getting new chain is a no brainer. Cut the old one up and put 50' or 60' on your secondary anchor, some on your kedge, and maybe a 10' piece on your dink anchor.

Re: chain testing

Make a link-by-link inspection of the chain for:
Excessive wear
Twisted, bent, gouged, nicked, worn, or elongated links.
Cracks in the weld area of any portion of the link. Transverse markings are the most dangerous.
Severe corrosion.

See “Chain Use, Care and Inspection”

Re: chain testing

when in doubt (and you are) don't you think it is best to replace the chain?
