Chain Galvanization question

I recently purchased 3/8" G40 ACCO galvanized chain.

I purchased 120' and after inspection it appears to me that the chain might not be properly galvanized.
Below is a closeup of one section of the chain. opnions??

I noticed the same thing on a brand new Crosby 1/2 shackle pin. I messed with it a little and there is stiil a coating on the steel under the grayness

Looks like a nice paint job

if you have doubt, exchange it.

Looks fairly typical of new chain galvo. They get it on pretty thin, and IME it doesn't last all that long.

On the shackle pin it was not paint. Also, the gray layer would chip off unlike normal galvanized coating which did not.
Is this some sort of Green Galvanizing process gone wrong?

This is how my galvanized chain looks like with a touch of grey paint in spots.
It's pretty close to what the OP is seeing on his new chain.

it might not look so cool while sitting on your bow, but i think you may be worrying before the fact..the galvo isnt what holds boat to bottom..is the chain.
boats used chain many centuries sans galvo.
enjoy your boat--if you dont like the chain, take it back for exchange before the deadline.

Yes, that is my Snubber Bridle.

I have no doubt it will hold up for a few years but I wonder if it will begin to rust sooner than later and I have spent quite a few $$$ on this investment. I can not exchange it very easily because I purchased it through a friend and because of it's weight.

Maybe I will go to the local WM and see if it looks similar. I have herd a few poeple discussing the quality of ACCO chain in recent years.

Well the average boat owner keeps their boat for only 3 years.
Maybe if your an average boat owner, then your anchor chain issue may not be as big of a problem as it appears right now.

Our next chain purchase will be all stainless rode. Galvanized turns to crap with rust in only three seasons or so with the amount of anchoring we do. The cheap Chinese junk only lasts one season according to my friend who accidentally bought some.

look like newish chain that has been stored so portions have oxidized and others are still shiny. What is your problem with the chain?? Is there any sign of rust on the chain??
