So it looks like the Mantus M2 is easy to get over here for about $300. That may be my next anchor.

Not sure where you came up with that, but my CQR sets immediately with my drift sets.
I watch / check from time to time at first to be sure I'm set, but that is it. I'm always in the same spot where I first dropped the anchor

300 not for me I have better places to put that much like into the cruise jar. That's 3+ years of diesel ( depending on winter temps and how much I run my furnace

This squall came in about 30 minutes after I anchored. I was actually on CF when I heard the wind increase having this exact same discussion.

Yeah so I guess if you have never plowed a huge field where you are on the tractor all day watching the weather etc you wouldn't know how good it is for training a young person for life on the water.
Farmers are always watching the weather and since most of the fields I plowed were in view of the bay or a creek off it you even learned more. I plowed on bayside and seaside, but you couldn't see the ocean due to the barrier islands.
Then add in the diesel engine maintenance and rusty plow maintenance and that helps as well with things like when to replace your rusty anchor chain etc since you have seen what is and what isn't a real problem.
Posted from RPI 4 which I am retesting after battery change.

Re: Bruce or CQR
But of course back in the day we didn't have video cameras with us so this is the closest I have found to my tractor but my plow was a 7 bottom with hydraulic assist
We plowed in early Spring in temps from 42 degrees to 55 or so but had engine covers to blow the heat back to the driver
Similar to this but with maybe 50-80 seagulls going for worms and gliding along side you within an arms reach plus deer crossing the fields
And since I was 17 my uncle was like every day, Tommy check the oil at lunch and run the engine at 2200 rpms in second gear. THIS EVERY DAY which is why I remember it 50 years later.
BTW my cousin is farming 2000 acres these days.....

Re: Bruce or CQR
This video is more like my plowing experience since I was usually plowing within 0-2 miles of the Chesapeake Bay or 2-3 miles from the ocean.
This was quite awesome to see as a 17 year old plus you could watch how the clouds moved all day and that is helpful when you are sailing within that same visual experience

Bruce or CQR
SMJ- exactly what I found as well when I bought my first Mantus, 10 years ago. So confidence inspiring.
And, as an example of when that matters, when my fuel line clogged in Absecon Inlet on an incoming tide with 25 knot breeze also pushing me toward the bridge - I was able to dump the Mantus on the anchorage off CG station and have full confidence it would bite immediately (as it did) and allow me to fix the clog. No “gentle soak technique”

Sounds exactly like how my CQR has saved me.
I don''t understand this soak technique you guys keep mentioning. Is that something you have to do with a new gen anchor? I have never heard of it until now from you that own the newer style anchors. It's okay though if you are a beginner and just don't understand how to anchor yet.
I can help if you need some pointers.
Once I let go the CQR and after the rode goes tight which is immediate I stay there. (period)
I have enjoyed using all the equipment that came with this boat that I purchased for $2000 about 10 years ago.
If you folks enjoy buying extra anchors that's good. I understand........
Btw I was anchored in this spot due to the front coming in. 2nd video. Posted onboard Raspberry Pi 4.

Re: Bruce or CQR
Ha ha Thomm225. I presume you are joking of course since the “soak” comes from “older gen” anchor users.
CQR works well for you, keep it. If you switch you won’t go back is all I’m saying. There aren’t any Mantus or Spades in my local consignment shop, only CQRs

The main thing is we all loves sailboats, sailing, and being on the water.
New video of music my sister played /practiced while I attempted to do home work from 9-14 years old. Funny how it never goes away.................
Had a beautiful day on the water today and my Sun high is still there......
posted with RPI 4 plus new golf cart 6 volt 220 ah batteries that allow me to stay online so long with the inverter on.
Thanks CF battery experts!

No it actually digs instead of turning the substrate away.
