Best place to buy ACCO or Campbell chain in Fort Lauderdale?

Why is google-searching so bad at finding where to buy anchor chain?

(Already know about Maggi http://www.cruisersforum.com/forums/...ml#post1860212)

But does anyone know where are the best places in Lauderdale or nearby to buy ACCO or preferably Campbell 5/16" HT chain?

Defender beats 1st Chain Supply for what I've been looking for.

ACCO 5/16 G43 90' Pail
Defender $290 plus $77 shipping (San Diego) $367 Total
1st Chain, shipping anywhere (I think) $461.70 Total

I've also looked at all the local places I can think of and Defender is beating them as well for the ACCO. I would love to give the local places my business but they're pretty much all in the $5-$5.50 a foot range.

I haven't compared all of what Defender and 1st Chain is offering but so far Defender looks like the better option. With you being on the same coast as Defender your shipping cost should be less than $77

Well that is good news. I am going to be buying a 1/2 barrel shortly and ship it to a freight fwd outfit in Miami. That looks like a pretty good savings

That's a good price on ACCO.

I'd prefer Campbell based on Practical Sailor's recent tests, but can't find it.

You might also look at some of the local Crane / Rigging shops in your area. They sell all types of chain and while they usually don't have galvanized windlass chain in stock they have the ability to order it and the price may be right. But when you talk to them make sure they know EXACTLY what you want. The places I talked to in SD were giving me great prices on chain until I figured out they were quoting me foreign made (Chinese) chain when I was wanting domestic stuff.
The prices they gave me on domestic stuff was good but I had to order a whole or half barrel. I couldn't just get a 100'. Had to be a "standard size" unit.

I wouldn't be too sure about that... :-)

Was your order of a weight that could be shipped UPS?

I purchased 200' of chain from Defender during their spring warehouse sale, placing an online order... Shipping was initially calculated at a surprisingly low rate... Hmmm, this doesn't sound right...

Sure enough, I get a call a few days later, explaining it would have to go by truck, of course at a much higher cost... So, it turned out I saved about $100 by driving up to Waterford from my home in NJ to pick it up, pretty much what I was expecting to have to do all along, anyway...

Still, tough to beat Defender's price, especially on a 'custom' length... I've had a look at First Chain Supply's site, and I'll be damned if I could figure out with confidence exactly what sort of chain I'd be getting from them, and if indeed it would be suitable for a windlass gypsy... Anyone considering purchasing from them, I'd advise to scrutinize the technical dimensions of the links VERY closely...

Re: Best place to buy ACCO or Campbell chain in Fort Lauderdale?

From what I can find UPS Ground limits out @ 150lbs, after that you need freight.

200' of 5/16 will be around 200lbs and 200' of 3/8 will be around 300lbs.

I'm just looking at the 90' pail which I believe should be just under 100lbs and doable by UPS Ground. I will say that I haven't ordered the chain yet but I'll call when I do and get the low down then.

Thanks for the heads up!

A. My GOV computer blocks the website for potential Malware.

B. The website (as seen on my phone) specifically states, "Not for use in windlass anchor systems,..."

I do love seeing the other options but I'll be passing on this one.

For the price, can it hurt to buy 20' to test in your windlass?

For shipping 300 feet of 5/16 (weighs a bit over 300#) to Fort Lauderdale, Defender just quoted me "The cost for shipping via ABF Freight to a residential address would be $325.00 and to a Commercial address with a fork lift or loading dock would be $240.00."

I have bought a half barrel (270') of 5/16 before and you don't need a loading dock or a fork lift. Just roll it out the back of the truck onto a tire or something. Truck drivers know how to do this kind of thing.

West Marine, Ft. Lauderdale. They have it in stock, any length, cut to order, and no freight charge to get it to you like from Defender. Plus, they'll most likely drop it off at your boat for you at no charge.
