I used the figure 8 links extensively during my oil drilling days and never managed to break one, broke a few chains though. Not sure they will fit the winch though, my recollection is that they were usually a fair bit larger than the chain links.

Re: Are these chain joiners OK?

I wouldn't trust joining links like those shown in the first post.

To me it doesn't seem much different to taking one of the links in your chain and sawing half-way through it in four places.

But, that's just me being cautious. Many people do use these links and our coasts are not littered with wrecked yachts caused by them failing so my caution is probably unjustified but, even so, being cautious at sea is probably not a bad thing.

Re: Are these chain joiners OK?

Just today picked up our 8mm chain extension and crosby chain joiner from CRA in Auckland. Went down this road too and spent a while googling broken joiners...nothing. Asked commercial skippers here and they've never had a problem. Anchor swivels on the other hand...won't go there! Will try joining them tomorrow but was told the crosby needs to be machined a little to move properly so it will go through a gypsy?

So you paid $70aud?
That's what they cost, 10gbp for the link and 30gbp in freight

I tried Whitworth's, and thats the problem: no specs.
The UK mob was the only ones in that size I could find specs for.

Re: Are these chain joiners OK?

I certainly would not use chain joiners at all, these type of joiners are not tested meaning they are not manufactured to industry standards. Throw them away and buy a new chain, after all thats all between the boat and the shore.
Lifting equipment like shackles, hooks and chain should have the Safe Working Load stamped on, which includes a safety factor...around 3 to 1
I hope that helps.

I'm not to happy they are there because in reality they are 1/2 the thickness at the weak points but I have read some threads on here and a couple of tests and some report well, just not sure if these are good ones or not.

The text is 3/8 and 316 (diameter and grade)

The chain is a mix of graded and non graded links.
On your boat sir I would be happy with 30 metres chain and then a heap of nylon 16 mm. I will get hammered now by people who neither know your boat or where you and I sail

Re: Are these chain joiners OK?

https://www.suncorstainless.com/cast-connecting-link
https://www.suncorstainless.com/forged-connecting-link

Two types from Suncor in the USA with working load specs.
I had this dilemma too about cutting out rusty bits and joining good bits of chain. I could not find a link that was the same breaking strain as G4 Chain. So I bought all new chain with rated shackles to the anchor. I sleep much better at night.

Re: Are these chain joiners OK?

The good C links are OK on G3 and G4 chain, but do not use the cheap no name products.

An alternative is the double clevis pin link. These are available in G7 steel, although they are not galvansided. A major advantage is the link can be disconnected so they are ideal if you want to extend chain on a temporary basis. These will not pass through all gypsies so you need to check.

Chain and rope can be a good solution, but you are always taking at least a slight gamble with the chafe resistance. In some areas it is a big gamble. Brisbane has some great tropical and coral areas on its doorstep, is 30m adequate on a 15m cat used for cruising?
