Anchor winch clutch uses brake pad material...is there an alternative material??

My windlass uses brake pad material that is 3mm thick and so this sometimes cracks. It’s not got the same heat stresses as a car so I am thinking of using an alternative material less prone to cracking.
Any ideas would be most appreciated

Not sure what you need without a pic of your existing.
Steel to steel clutch/brakes are used for some low speed applications.
Here is a link that may get you started. / Len

I have my Quick windlass disassembled.
The 2 clutch cones look more like bronze.

Mine are 3mm thick and disc shaped, after some time they get thinner and then crack. I am thinking of doing some testing by replacing the material with 3mm plywood and seeing what happens over a week. If it gets hot then I will see the marks on the wood. It is a 5 min job to swap between materials. During this time I will stress the winch more and allow slippage as if weighing anchor in a storm.
