That's a function of roller design. In my mind, a well designed roller should have some component that prevents the anchor from bouncing vertically out of the roller assembly while underway to avoid that issue.

Re: Anchor storage

Regarding leaving the chain under tension at the windless: for a while several years ago, I was securing my anchor in its roller with a line made off to a cleat on the (Lofrans Tigress) windless head and in addition had the chain under tension. The ongoing tension over time caused premature failure of the gypsy shaft bearing & seal with some subsequent leakage of the oil out of its reservoir and onto the deck. After I replaced the bearing and seal I made sure that there was load on the gypsy only when bringing the anchor in and haven't had any problems with it since.

Re: Anchor storage

I highly recommend a secondary means. We have one (a permanently secured chain hook that we drop on the chain), but for whatever reason the anchor girl* forgot. Coming out of Cape Cod Canal with a 2 kt favorable current and a 20 kt adverse wind (that's the way it always works southbound), the pounding (5' waves on 50' periods) shook the anchor badly enough that the brake slowly slipped and when down to the water line the banging on the hull became loud enough to alert us to the casualty. Some nice dings in the gel coat.

Re: Anchor storage

I use a chain hook on short length of line and release tension in windlass. I have a second length of line to tie to the anchor if needed. I also added a bail to the end of the anchor roller so the anchor can't fly up and out of the roller.

Re: Anchor storage

I always tie off the anchor and ease the chain.

I do not like the anchor to dangle in seaway and many design do. So i tie off. It stopps all movement.

Re: Anchor storage

Cat skinning,
Me personally, I use a s/s ratchet strap & relieve the load on the winch & the surrounding deck area.
When I go off shore the anchor gets stowed below.

If your anchor can pop off at sea, it can likely also jump the roller n a violent anchorage…. You might want to look at adding a top loop that prevents either.
