Anchor Squeak
Delightful day for sailing in SFLA. Got out, set the main, turned off the diesel, set the genoa and it was glorious. Set the AP and started to trim the sails to get her dialed in.
As hull speed went up the first squeak happened. As speed picked up, the squeaks continued. When the roller got spray on it, the noise stopped. When it dried SQUEAK.
The squeak is the results of side to side rotation of the anchor in the roller. I do not have a windlass and tie off the anchor to a separate bow cleat.
Any tips?

Re: Anchor Squeak
May need more tension on that lashing. Can you improvise some sort of spanish windlass between the anchor and the cleat. Difficult to explain, picture might help
Make the lashing between anchor and cleat as a bight, then twist the bight to get it tight.

Re: Anchor Squeak
I put a line round the flukes, over the gunwale and onto a cleat. It helps in our case.

Re: Anchor Squeak
Just lash it until there's no movement.

Re: Anchor Squeak
Rather than spend a half hour lashing it up, a set of tapered chocks are self tightening and only need a light bungee to stay in place.

If it takes half an hour to lash your anchor down you need to practise knot tying.

There are some anchors that deserve corporal punishment

Re: Anchor Squeak
Have you considered using a bungee cord?

Re: Anchor Squeak
Use a Truckers Hitch.. its a compond adjustment made to tighten up anything.. tie it to the anchor and wrap it around the cleat.

Re: Anchor Squeak
Personally, I like the anchor to be ready to go when needed rather than cinched up tight. Tried a spot of grease? Just a dab may stop the squeak.

Re: Anchor Squeak
Thanks for the inputs. I agree about over securing the anchor. Especially coastal or day sailing on a 40 year old boat; the anchor needs to be ready. If I was doing a multi-day passage, I would definitely lash the anchor. To much risk if it ever came loose!
I will check the rollers and perhaps add bungee.
Zee- nothing like the sweet sound of the wind and the gurgle as she approaches hull speed. The anchor squeak kinda ruins the moment. Almost as bad as the work cell phone ringing.

The anchor should really be secured somehow when underway so it doesn't fall and bring the boat to a sudden stop.

Re: Anchor Squeak
mine wont squeak if it is sitting in the roller and has a line securing it in case something pushes it over... it wont go until i free one line. no problem. i also have to give the damthing a healthy push.
mebbe my boat is long enough not to hear squeeks from bow, as it is 41 ft and aft cockpit....
mebbe i should listen for em more closely.... mebbe my spreader light fluid is low.....
i been sailing for how long, now, and never had a problem with squeaky anchor while sailing. interesting......been out only 3 1/2 years, 4th furycame season out and about (in my own boat, anyway)... hhmm mebbe i missed something.....hhmm is still the same old bruce i left sd with.....
