Do you also use a rope snubber?

I tie a rag around it so when the snubber clicks to the side the noise is muffled.

I run the snubber over the bow roller. Plus my roller is not a V shaped on but a bit of conduit. Cheaper than a bow roller and lasts longer.

This is how we rig our snubbers. I run two snubbers to the chain from both bow chocks. Attach with rolling hitches making a bridle off the bow. No “clunk” and further reduces sailing around the anchor. Also comforting to know there are two snubbers in case one should fail.

Re: Anchor Rode Clunk

don't have any bow chocks and if I out two snubbers on each side for the most part all they are going to do is chafe on the deck and bow sprit.

Sounds like the boat is sailing at anchor a lot. Try to quite her by decrease windage forward and related methods. A bridle, as others have suggested, will help. Yes, you may have to add chocks or cleats; you'll find them useful, I wager.

Google horsing, sailing at anchor, and hunting.

Does the bow roller have sort of a deep "V" cut into it as a chain guide? If so, here's what works for us:

Piece of old 7/8" mooring line a couple of meters long.
One end w/loop & secured to a bow cleat, then out over the bow roller & back aboard under the roller.
Return/lower end tied w/quick release knot.

Snubber line follows the chain path but instead of popping in & out of the "V" rubs against or slides over that old piece. Both lines will eventually wear but are replaceable. Inspect during routine checks up forward.

Hoist anchor: yank quick release, pull in chain like normal removing snubber attachment from chain when within reach. Action of chain coming up pulls old piece of line back aboard.

The Blonde solution is to stuff an old ratty float cushion between the rode and anchor roller....

generally after 1 am.....

Re: Anchor Rode Clunk

Sometimes it's the roller itself, whacking the cheeks of the roller. In that case, get a thin sheet of teflon, (or maybe you could use one of those skinny cutting plastic dealies), and cut yourself a cheek sized washer, make a hole for the axle, and cut one radius in, so you can slide it over the axle. It will quieten the sound.

However, as you find yourself anchoring in stronger and stronger winds, eventually, you will still get a "clunk."

As an update I solved this problem plus the problem of the snubber chafing at the same time. I got some old firehose and cut a 4 foot section and ran the snubber line through it and play it out so the hose is at the section of the boat roller. It fills the area, allows the snubber rope to not it caught between the chain and rollers, and protects the snubber from charfe.

For all your firehose needs. They have some other interesting stuff as well on a rotating basis:

Re: Anchor Rode Clunk

My unmarried 30 year old daughter just went to the local firehouse and asked if they had any old firehose she could have. She left with two full rolled up hoses......but is still unmarried
I now have chafe guards for everything.
