Anchor power solenoid bust?

We are getting up power but not down. We directly put a wire on the selenoid and down is dead, up is alive. Do I buy a new Selenoid or did I miss anything? Please help.

Are you sure the windlass is a power down type--and not just free fall?

The solenoids very commonly fail and I would be very surprised if this is not the problem. If however you have bypassed the solenoid and connected the motor to power down and are not getting any down rotation the solenoid is obviously not the problem.
If you describe how you bypassed the solenoid for down and how many poles the motor has we can see if you have done the bypass correctly.

OP doesn't say split field or reverse polarity, ergo, I started with the simplest.

You could actually get an answer that will work for you, but I doubt it. You did not give any of us experts enough information.

• Windlass Model?
• Does it have a windlass control box?
• How many wires go to the windlass motor?
• Are you using a remote?
• Have you eliminated a problem with the remote?
• Etc, etc.

I hope you understand that there are lots of people here willing to tell you what they know based on their experience, and there are some just willing to tell you what they know.

Be a little more specific and you might get lucky. For instance I have a Lofrans Tigres 1200 24 volt. It has a control box which houses 2 solenoids. Once I had the exact same problem as yours. When I opened the control box a half moon shaped piece of plastic about 1/4" in diameter fell out. It had wedged itself between the contact points. Both solenoids worked, the control box worked, the remote worked, but that darn piece of plastic got between the contact points.

Test by switching the up solenoid to the down position. Both solenoids are the same.

First aid for solonoids is to hit them sharply with a hammer.... It's crude, but the piston gets stuck a lot, and just needs to be wacked free. I have had some come back to life and last for years after a good strike. That being said, I also carry a new one as a spare on the boat.

Had the same problem with Sprint 1000, would go up not down, breaker would pop if I held the down switch. Turned out motor and solenoid were fine, the cup clutch was worn out. I believe the cup clutch controls the down speed. After two months of waiting for parts bought a Maxwell.
