Same at my Marina. And it's typical to see a 22 lb Bruce on a 35 ft boat. That doesn't make it a good idea, though.

Re: Anchor Poll

it appears that at least 40% of the anchors in the poll are of the 'new' variety - manson/rocna/spade - and would probably be higher if we could extract the information in the 'other' category.

i for one have the manson and am DELIGHTED with it....

Many boats seek the shelter of marinas in bad weather, nothing wrong with that, but these people are less likely to invest in good anchoring gear.

The condition of the substrate and expected conditions also makes an significant differance. In good holding in begnin conditions all anchors do well.
If you want to know what anchors work well you need to select a different subset of boats.

Absolutely +1 One need to see the anchors long distance cruisers are actually using thesedays. I observed a number of vessels that cleared into Mackay, Australia from the World ARC and a NZ/Pacific rally. Did not recall any CQR's, most had new generation anchors - Manson, Rocna, Spade and still the odd Bruce.

Can't argue with that. Appears that 90% of boaters leave their berths between never and once a year.

Nevertheless, am not ashamed or believe to be unserved with a claw anchor which has never failed.

Indeed! ps- Seing a lot more Spade. Had the fortune to sail to Cabo aboard a Hylas 45.5 last year. Owner had just purchased a beauty Spade and that sucker dug in, easily. Expensive, but got my vote

Re: Anchor Poll

I am surprised by the number of boats that are using anchors that are well over the recommended size . I can understand going up one size but some here seem to be going a bit over board.

I'm inexperienced. Wet behind the ears. New.

I don't have thousands of miles of cruising under my belt. I have a young and beautiful wife aboard with me.

I hope that having an oversized anchor will make up for a few newbie mistakes while we get our bearings, meet other cruisers and try to learn the craft of anchoring in the real world and not just from books and the internet.

It might be a fools errand to think that over sizing can save me any trouble, but you know, you do what you can. I have a big strong back and a small weak mind. Until I can reverse that equation, maybe a big anchor will go some small way towards salvation.

Re: Anchor Poll

When the feces hits the fan, nobody ever wishes for a smaller anchor.
No matter how you slice it, bigger, digs better.
Ever go to a mooring field and ask for the smallest mooring?

We cruised both sides of the Atlantic for years with a 66lb Bruce for our 39 foot Corbin.

Our new boat (light and fast 50 foot Cat) has an oversized Rocna on order. My anchor is not where I want to save weight.

Cheers, and happy cruising.
Paul.

Bügel-Anker -- like this one: Bgel-Anker - Stahl verzinkt ab 75,90 € - SVB

Only time it's ever failed me was when I dropped it on a sheet of submerged plastic sheet.

Re: Anchor Poll

I too would have reservations on the poll. Here in Oz most new yachts are commissioned with Deltas. A straw poll of UK marinas and estuary moorings would suggest they too carry a lot of Deltas. There are few second hand Deltas for sale - but the poll does not reflect the Oz (nor my narrow view of UK) data - unless as mentioned, the people who have Deltas are not part of CF.

But I wonder if I log on and each time I log on I complete the poll am I actually allowed one vote, or multiple votes. Might I skew the results (which look markedly scewed to me). In the particular part of Pittwater where we moor our cat, there are maybe 500 yachts, of which there might be 4 Rocnas, 4 Supremes and 4 Excels - the rest are CQR 'types' Bruce 'types' or Delta 'types'. If I go down to 2 local marinas the results are similar but the numbers of genuine Deltas increases and I might find a couple of Bugels. Even though many might not anchor much the poll results look 'odd'.

We carry, on a 38' cat a 16kg Excel as a primary anchor. As secondary anchor we carry either an FX 23, and/or alloy Spade A80 and/or an alloy Excel (same physical size as the gal model). We like the alloy as they can be dinghied out, we like the Fortress because it stores flat, we like the Spade because it disassembles and we often use the alloy Excel instead of the gal model.

JonJo,

Don't believe every thing you think.
You only get one vote no matter how many times you log in.
The votes are based on CF members not location on the planet.

Well, that's a relief!

That's the trouble with thinking too much.

There is another current thread on SARCA Excels, looks to me as if the contributors to the thread who use an Excel, of which there are a few - do not contribute to polls.

Re: Anchor Poll

The SARCA Excel looks like a fancy Dela anchor. Have not seen any of those in the USA. This anchor has a convex plow blade design

Looks like the Cruising Forum members like concave blade shaped anchors like the Mason and Rocna which are really the same design with 64 votes total so far

These Bügel Anchors are really quite popular in Europe especially in Germany. However I believe that making them yourself is not really worth it because you can buy them relatively cheaply made in China. I paid about 160€ which is about $200 for a 30kg Anchor and for that you don't make it yourself.

I have just swapped from a rocna to an excel because I found the rocna would not set all that well in soft mud. The excel set remarkably well on a windy night, boat didn't move at all in exactly the same spot that the rocna dragged on three occasions. To be fair to rocna it is the size recomended (15 kg) by them and the excell is the size recomended by sarca (20 kg).
