Wire ties, loosely attached every 5 fathoms has worked well for me.

We do the same.

Orange every 10 meters; white every 30 (which we consider one "shot")

So two orange marks = 20 meters

Two white and an orange = 70 meters

etc.

Works well and is still quite visible even when the paint is well worn and flaking off.

Previously used plastic inserts but these kept falling out.
