Anchor Chain Guide thingy

I need a new anchor chain guide thingy, but have no idea what it is called.
I can't show a photo as it snapped in two when the chain got caught and fell overboard.
Let me try and explain.

Its sort of a reverse Hawse. The chain comes off the roller and this piece guides the chain into the chain locker. It is mounted on the deck and has a pipe piece sticking up to accept the chain. Kind of like a railing base piece:

But mine is bigger, stronger and made of bronze. The plate is oval and has only two screws. The upstanding pipe part that accepts the chain is wider diameter than a railing base with a slight flare to accept the chain.

So what is it called, and where can I find a replacement?!

And while I am at it, how can I prevent my chain from piling up inside the chain locker and jamming the chain guide? I can't up-anchor from the bridge, I have to be at the windlass to keep reaching into the locker and pulling the chain pile aft to prevent bunching. Any ideas?

Re: Anchor Chain Guide thingy

Best guess is a spurling pipe
BRIGGS MARINE - strainers, scoops, spurling pipes, exhaust pipes

As to how to stop the chain building up under the pipe, can you rig a small deflector under the pipe to send the chain in a different direction

You might also find it called a "chain pipe", "deck pipe", or "chain deck pipe" in various catalogs and online stores.

Re: Anchor Chain Guide thingy

I've read that some put a small traffic cone in the locker below the chain pipe which helps to prevent the chain piling up

Great idea! I've been mulling over various diverter options but all seemed to have a drawback and/or difficult to fasten. Love the traffic cone idea, easy to remove and clean too

Re: Anchor Chain Guide thingy

You WILL need a chain stripper someplace to remove the chain from the gypsy. Mine is made part of the the hawse pipe by Maxwell. Cannot help with chain teepee that forms in the chain locker, I have the same problem. It becomes a two person job to weigh anchor, one to work switches and the other to knock down the teepee.

I do suggest....as other did to me..... that you should be careful trying to use your windlass to pull your boat forward. I learned the hard way. The chain become tightly wrapped on the gypsy and if the stripper is not REALLY secured to the deck, the chain can... and did to mine... rip the hawse pipe and stripper right off the deck.

Mine still sits in my garage. I plan to reinstall it using threaded rod stock and not screws.

Recommend that you check out the hawse pipe/stripper that Maxwell uses with their HWC2200 series windlasses.

I have a large cleat to which i secure the rode and only use the windlass to pull the anchor up as i motor towards it. No hawse pipe. The locker is an ooen space and the chain drops without any piling up.
