Anchor chain

I'd like to have about another 50' of chain on our gear. Is there any acceptable way to add that to the existing chain rode or are split links or cold shuts not considered safe. I didn't know how a chain swivel would work around the windlass so haven't considered that option. I wasn't really wanting to replace the whole length of chain but I know that would be the best option. Any comments would be appreciated.

I used to belong to a yacht club and we took care of our own moorings. When we had to add chain or repair one we used these links that you had to crush after you threaded the to lengths together. We never had any of the links fail. I do not know what you'd call them. It's possible they are split links you're talking about but I'm not sure. You can get them at hardware stores. Good luck!
