Anchor alarm app stopped working on iPhone

I use an anchor drag alarm app on my iPhone while in bed and after years of reliable service it stopped working.

When I put the phone down, within 10 seconds or so the GPS stops updating the position and doesn't start back up until I pick up the phone.

I downloaded a couple of other anchor drag apps and the problem is the same with them.

My phone is a iPhone 10, and the problem also happens on my wife's iPhone 8. Both have up-to-date operating systems.

This might affect navigation apps as well but I haven't tested that yet.

I contacted the developer who was unaware of the problem and said he would look into it. I won't hold my breath.

There must be a setting to fix this but all permissions and settings that I can find don't make a difference.

Any ideas?

Phone updates sometimes cause changes to your phone settings.

Check those, especially look to see if it is set to only work when opened.

Check a setting about background updating for that app in the settings tab of your phone. It maybe changed when you installed a new version of the OS.

You're sure its not just going to sleep/lock? The raise to wake mode is kind of a clue...

Macblaze, thanks very much for your comment and screenshot!

My Auto Lock setting has always been "Never" and I tested turning off "Raise to Wake" and that doesn't make a difference.

Here's some new info-

I usually have the phone in my hand when tapping "Drop Anchor" but I just tested leaving it on the table while doing so and the drift doesn't move, at all, until I pick it up.

What the heck? That's gotta mean something, but what setting will change that?

Maybe try a reset for Location Services?

Launch Settings->General->Reset.
Tap “Reset Location & Privacy”.
Enter the Passcode if asked. Tap “Reset Settings” in the pop-up box.

Good suggestion, but didn't change anything. Still behaves as before...

Same thing happens on my wife's iPhone and on our iPad.

"Low Power Mode" is off... I leave it plugged in when using it overnight.

I do know the Date andTime one can cause funky results.

• Toggle Location Services Off and On
• Open your phone Settings > Privacy > Location Services and toggle the switch OFF
• Perform a hard reset on your iPhone
• Return to Settings > Privacy > Location Services and toggle the switch back ON
• Toggle Airplane Mode On and Off
• Set Date & Time to “Set Automatically” via Settings > General > Date & Time
• Turn off LTE
• Reset network settings
• Set Do Not Disturb While Driving to Manually
• Drain your battery completely
• Update or Restore your device using iTunes

Wow, big list! The fact that 3 different anchor alarm apps behave the same way on my iPhone, my wife's iPhone, and our iPad tells me that it's a global setting problem, probably update related, so is there value on doing all this?

I'm thinking there is a new iOS setting or setting problem related to an update and that there must be a fix, workaround, or new setting or setting feature that I'm not aware of, would you agree?

In the past I've lost use of some favorite apps because of system updates removing functionality or changing functionality to the point that the developers can't or don't want to keep up.

I hope this is not the case for anchor watch apps as they use the same GPS and features of navigation apps!

It wouldn't hurt to try anything that is a reset or turnoff/turn on again. But given it is on more than one phone stuff like draining the battery likely won't help.

Might just be a small error that will be fixed in the next minor update, but I can't see it being a permanent issue with the ios — these kind of apps are too popular.

I downloaded 2 other anchor watch apps and they have the same problem. The one I've been using was developed by a friend (and the PO of my boat!) and he said he would look into it. I've messaged the other developers but haven't heard yet.

Given that we have a large community of boaters that might use these apps, I am hoping someone has an answer, and even if not, many users of these apps might not even know they're not working as they should!
