Yamaha Enduro Outboard

Any view on the 2 stroke enduro range of outboards for a 3.6m tender? I'm thinking 8hp...

Solid engines... lot at Tohatsu also though... arguably same bang for less buck.

I think the 6/8hp Enduro is the sole dog in the model line and not a good engine at all. I would also recommend the Tohatsu/Mercury over it.

If you are set on a Yamaha Enduro, step up to the 9.9/15hp instead - a far superior engine than the 6/8hp.

We have been running Yamaha 8hp for years. A few years back we decide to buy a Yamaha enduro 8hp in Mexico. We found the dink had trouble planning with 2 of us on board with gear. With the older US Yamaha it had much more power and we never had trouble planning. Wish we bought a 15

The 9.9 and the 15 are the same engine just with different carburation settings. So, same weight for both and the 15 is not much more expensive than 9.9 so best to go with the 15. Probably never been a better small engine than the Yamaha 15hp 2-stroke.

I worked on some Enduros in Fiji back in the 90's, and IIRC they still had magneto type ignition systems rather than Capacitive Discharge. Again, IIRC, that ignition system was often the reason I was asked to get the things going (Fijians are wonderful folk, but not keen maintainers of engines!). Does the modern generation of Enduros still have that drawback?

If so, I would pass on them.

Yes, you cannot buy 2-stroke engines in the US. The best replacement in the US for the Yamaha 15 2-stroke is the Suzuki 20hp 4-stroke. For $200 less, you can get the Suzuki 15hp, but it is the same engine as the 20hp, so you may as well pop up to that.

BTW, the US Yamaha 2-stroke was one of the best engines made and a completely different beast than the Enduro 15hp. You may not find a true "replacement" for it. But that Suzuki is a nice engine.

AFAIK, the Enduro design and parts have not changed in many decades. That is kind of the whole point of them…

Absolutely. I own several from 15 to 60HP. You can fix almost anything with basic hand tools.

My reason for asking about the 8hp was the weight. I'll be taking off the engine and placing it in my catamarans engine room after each use. Something in the 25kg range is more friendly than 45kgs... Looking at 8hp Mercury now...

Nope, they are CDI.
