Who knows how to keep telescoping boat hooks from jamming?

It seems I can only get two or three years out of my boat hooks -- they jam up with salt residue and corrosion, and stop sliding.

Is there any way to prevent this, other than fresh water wash-downs after every use? (not practical for a boat that's kept on mooring full time in salt water).
