So when they steal it they are good to go if questioned.

Re: Where do you keep the registration for the dink?

I've never been pressed for that, if the tender has numbers and the state sticker.

What they do want is your fishing permit and operators permit (for the kids--I'm too old). We keep copies in a zip-lock cable tied under the seat. This has worked fine, for years.

It seems several times each year they do a dragnet for small boats and jet skis. They are pretty calm with the tenders if you have the requirements (PFDs, horn, permits) and even if you are missing something ("oops, I left my permit on the big boat"); it's the jet skis they target.

OK, Pete, just noticed you're in the UK.

In California, whether your boat is US documented or State registered has no affect on the dinghy's state registration requirement.

Back in the early '90's on the way to Mexico, when we got to Newport Beach we faked our dinghy numbers. We did this after hearing about the local water cops being shall we say, "Agressive" about having registration numbers prominently displayed.
We were "legal" in their eyes, even though the numbers were fictional.
They consisted of our previous state letters, 4 digit street address, and our first name initials or some such. Worked like a charm.

My real question to all this is, what the hell has this got to do with anything in their jurisdiction? they aren't getting any tax money from someone with or without rubber stickers on their boats? It's just a way to exact more $$ from someone who hasn't paid some other jurisdiction a pound of flesh.

I posted this story a few years ago and got heat from some regulation loving CF moderator who will be contacting me again for being "political"...

What this may have to do with anything political, rather than criminal extortion remains to me, a mystery.

Great idea! That's exactly why I keep it in the boat. I'd forget it every time if I didn't.

Only personal info on my registration is my name. Could find that out online using registration numbers on the dinghy in a few minutes.
