Re: Urgent - Welded PVC or Glued Hypalon

The bottom fell out of a West Marine inflatable, the cheaper PVC 1,000 $ one.
It came with a boat, was used one week by buyer and one week for me too.
As it came with the boat , I have no idea when it was purchased then stored.
Perhaps 5 years. It looked unused. Repair failed. As second repair. Trashed it.

As far as repairs go you must use the correct glue . Also with pvc wipe the area that
Is being repaired with mek just prior to glue application.

I don't think anyone should buy a dinghy without at least looking at the Portland Pudgy. The stability of an inflatable with the ruggedness of a hard dinghy. Comes with life raft hood and sailing options. No affiliation, it's just the dinghy I have my heart set on when I can afford one :-) http://www.portlandpudgy.com/

That's how I got my 11' bombard that needed a small patch. Nick wanted a Portland pudgy.
When he bought the la Ruina he gave me my dink . ( It went with the boat at sale. He gave it to me 6 months later.)

In a climate controlled area?

Ambient moisture causes the reaction to start inside the pot, so effectively, you're brushing pre-cured adhesive on to your boat...

Polyurethane PVC adhesives tend to contain more alcoholics than their polychlororene counterparts, which make them more hygroscopic.

Re: Urgent - Welded PVC or Glued Hypalon

As mentioned here brand and sometimes even model can matter almost as much as Hypalon vs PVC. And sometimes use vs cost comes in. My father has a PVC Zodiac because the price was great and it was for seasonal use here in New England. Its about 8 years old now and still in fine shape. We also have an Achilles from the 80's in the garage hard to beat good fabric from a quality builder.

I used to deal with Warranties on a number of inflatable brands I can tell you certain PVC brands had more claims from material failure then others. SO the best bet is to do the research for the exact model you want and go from there.

On the hand glued thing, the most common problem I used to see on hand glued hypalon was slow annoying leaks, happened alot more then outright seam failures.
