Submerged Outboard

Last fall my 8 hp yamaha ob was submerged for a day or so.
I stripped it down and flushed everything with ethel alcohol and got it running .
after the winter lay up it runs fine but has a minor sieze after a week or two of sitting. I am not able to turn it over without ermoving the recoil mechanisim and forcebly getting it to rotate. then it works fine until it sits or a few days.

I have fogged it internally by removing the carb and reeds. Does anyone have any further ideas where i need to lube this so it will not sieze up?

is it 2 or 4 stroke. for 2 stroke check your oil ratio, for 4 stroke get a bank loan.

Did you check the pistons / rings. Sounds like you may need to hone out the cylinder, inspect the piston and possibly replace the rings. Pretty easy job on a 2 stroke.

I've been told a submerged motor needs to be run for 2 or 3 hours ASAP to lubricate the motor, a few minutes is not enough. Add extra 2 stroke oil in the mix also.

My old 2t 35hp Evinrude fell of the back one day whilst messing around. Got back to shore after a while of rowing got it out. Took plugs out turned it over for a bit squirted WD in turned it over again plugs back in covered engine in WD after letting it dry a bit.Never missed a beat after that. I should have really changed the gear oil but never did. I did run it for a good while after to dry out insides.

Back many years ago I was an Evenrude mechanic and never liked going to work after an all-night rain storm. A sunk boat was most always a given.

We would get the boat back to the marina a.s.a.p., pull and rebuild the starter, dry out all electrical, pull plugs, pull the carbs and with a 1" electric drill turn over the engine and pour massive amounts of alcohol into the motor. Our main concern was to get all of the saltwater out of the bottom bearing. If that was not done the motor would always cease up on a later date.

My guess would be…. this is what happen on your motor.

i like to use diesel instead of alcohol. lube things up nicely, give the mechanics the alcohol(rum or beer matters not) then fill cylinders with diesel(plugs out) and pour it down carb also, do it a few times.
it sounds like you have to remove recoil mechanism due to lack of lube.
Warning as tempting as it is PB blaster is not recomended for this. it will eat soft parts and rubber.
once you get it turning freely run it for a long time.
spray diesel over every thing before closing cover.
my last 6hp sunk three times once kids stole and flipped dinghy and i found it after being submerged three days!
