Re: Solid Tenders - OC Tenders
Totally get being hard to justify the $12K dinghy - but a couple of points
1. It is LIGHT - which means no wrenching our backs to pull it up on the beach etc.
2. It is light - we were just cruising with friends...they bought more gas for the motor than fuel for the boat in 1 year of the Carib & East Coast US cruising - with a 10HP this sips gasoline according to users.
3. Flat top sides w/non slip adds to safety factor vs slippery
4. Fishing rod holders - that double as handrails w/a boat hook handle placed in their - important to us 60+ folks.
5. The storage area under the Gunnels are very handy for everything from radio to med kit....
6. It can be rowed, legitimately
7. The 'fender' around the boat is very robust and people using it for 2+ years have not had any issues so far.
8. It is LIGHT which means less weight on the Davits, less weight high up or on deck,
9. Oh yes, when they get the sailing version redone - that is a given for us!
cheers

Re: Solid Tenders - OC Tenders
One thing about the oceancraft aluminum boats, I can't find any weights on their website.

Re: Solid Tenders - OC Tenders
Interesting to see the design of the ocean craft from Aussie. We have had alloy ribs here in NZ for about 40years (we call them pontoon boats here- different beast to the US ‘pontoon boat‘) the NZ designs seem to be more sophisticated with (among other things) D shaped tubes compared to the O shaped tubes on the oceancraft. There has been a company making a soft sided version (Mclay Softie) For about 15 years. It will be interesting to see if with the success of the OC some of the other NZ Alloy boat manufacturers such as Stabicraft, Frewza, Orca, Osprey, DNA......get in on the act. A company like stabicraft already have the international marketing network.

They say that imitation is the sincerest form of flattery.... that’s almost an exact copy.

Certainly looks like a copy. But still a good choice for those in europe if the quality holds. I think the folks on Cat Greatcircle are getting one. That is where I saw this.

It is almost an exact copy, though I still prefer the OCT one, just little details seem better on the OCT. Shipping costs from NZ still killing me!

Re: Solid Tenders - OC Tenders
It looks really promising, and it seems cheaper than OC, even before shipping. I wonder what the shipping is to the US. Normally I would be nervous that this is a low quality knock-off, but it says it's made in Germany, so maybe a high quality knock-off? It looks like you can get it for less than 2/3rd's the cost of an OC.

I was wondering is that "fender" replaceable in case of damage or is permanently fixed to the boat?

Re: Solid Tenders - OC Tenders
Ones that are being made in Langkawi
Not sure of construction, I would think nidaplast, poly and biax or double bias.
No idea on price
Personally, I had on a previous boat a stitch and tape flat bottomed punt made from 6mm and 3mm gaboon ply and PVC tube to cap it off and for stiffeners.
Was very light and could comfortably carry 6 drunks near a mile back to the yachty after racing with no one going for a swim.
Could stand in the bow and lean left to right to steer it
Couple of hundred bucks and a weekends work.

That's nice, do you remember where you found those plans?

Re: Solid Tenders - OC Tenders
Hi, new member, first post—
Admiral and I are around 60, two years boating experience with our OA 42 Sedan, researching tender/davit options. Located in PNW where we have occasional choppy conditions. We don’t mind paying once/crying once provided we are happy with our purchase. Love everything we see on OC Tenders, wondering how folks in this thread still feel about them. Cheers from WA State

Welcome.
Don’t own one but would surmise that they have all the worst traits of both inflatables and solid tenders.
Like an inflatable they will pound underway, row poorly and take more horsepower and fuel for a given speed & range.
Like a solid tender they will take up more storage space, probably more than a similar length solid tender.
The only advantages are stability like an inflatable and durability like a solid tender.
I think a RIB would be a better compromise. Stability like an inflatable, power & range almost as good as a solid, pounding and durability somewhere in the middle, the bottom that grounds on the beach is solid, the tubes see less wear but are still exposed to sun damage. Don’t know how well they can be rowed. Still have problems with storage on deck.
A solid dinghy with a floatation collar would have most of the advantages of a solid and stability in the middle.

Re: Solid Tenders - OC Tenders
I’m looking at either one from off center harbor which is a wooden dinghy kit or Trinka 10. I refuse to consider a rib or inflAtable. Needs to row plus you get a fun little sailboat too. Anyone have experience with either?
