Re: Signalling Cannon ...

I have seen these used for important yacht races like the Sydney to Hobart.

Re: Signalling Cannon ...

There's longish story to this cannon thread. I'm an octogenarian - I closed a hobby company in 1987 that was making smooth bore cannon. Had a lot of FUN - started a lotta races, fired the opening of a major bridge, re-enacted the Battle of Trafalgar at Expo-86 (fired by governors general of Britain, France & Spain) ... but it was not making much money and was taking a lot of my time. That was thirty odd years ago. I kept a one-inch cannon for my boat (Song of Joy) and a beer can mortar for the house (a floating home in Vancouver's False Creek).
Recently a friend asked about the cannon on the boat. I explained. He asked "can you build one for me?" REALLY I said ??? I think part of the attraction is that he wanted his name and a date cast into, as part of, the barrel. A standard thing we did - makes it UNIQUE /One of a Kind ... Well, I have not much else to do (don't golf) so I told him I'd look into it ...
First thing was to call the foundry - now being operated by the owner's son. GOOD GRIEF !!! they still had my patterns. They gave me a quote. Carriages had been build by local woodworkers - unfortunately (for them) they had passed away. But I was able to find a Gung Ho kinda woodworker in Seattle who was willing to build carriages.
Word got around and three more lunatics wanted me to build a cannon for them - making a total of four. That was last year. Two more fellows are agonizing over ordering ...
I'm long retired, no longer have a company to market from. The four sales were for local guys, friends (now Gunners). At this point I have no idea how a cannon might be shipped. I would need a deposit. And no idea who, in their right mind, would trust a stranger on a forum. Interesting ...
That's it for now ... wineOdock time - CHEERS !!!
