Re: Reflective Piping on Dinghy Cover

UNCIVILIZED,

The cord you mention, how do you think it would be at shedding mud? I mentioned your post to Jim, and one on-going problem we've had with various forms of marking chain is that some muds stain the markers. (We use light line threaded through the links, different colors for the various marks, but suspect that one night in Baie de Prony and it's going all to be rust colored.) At least, the lengths do not get caught in the gypsy, or broken off (like cable ties) or worn off (like paint).

Thanks for the heads up, guys. Definitely useful stuff.

Ann

MikeO'Reilly,

Maybe the sticky tape would work well on your Porta Bote?

Re: Reflective Piping on Dinghy Cover

Ann, sorry for the lag. As to shedding mud, I kind of doubt that without a wash down system it would be ideal. Especially if it's that thick, clingy stuff. But I'd imagine that with just a light rinsing going on as the chain comes in, it'd likely work well enough to see by flashlight, when you got to a mark.
You might have to stop the hauling in temporarily in order to count the strands, but it'd definitely pick up enough glint to let you know that you were at a mark.

You could always buy 1m or 1' & test it out to see what you think, & go from there.

Great job Ann! The reflective tape is a vast improvement and if nothing else, after a doctail party you can find your Dingy real quick! Been there done that!

I hear you.

However, the background to this is that a friend was seriously injured, days in hospital, in the Bahamas when their dinghy was run over by a power boat, so the need for dinghies being more visible to others than just their running lights make them has been simmering for a while. The downside of my "solution" is that it requires someone to be paying attention!

Anyhow, thank you for the kind words.

Ann
