Porta Bote bottom paint

Does anyone have experience applying bottom paint to portabotes? What type of paint did you use? Did you need to prime first? Type primer? How long did the paint last and was it effective? Any help and advice is greatly appreciated.

Can't help you directly, but have you tried contacting the manufacturer? They would know what sort of primer would be required on the plastic hull.

Do you get growth on your portabote? I haven’t seen any on mine, but I don’t leave mine just sitting in the water for long periods of time. It’s either in and out of the water as we move around. Or it’s being hauled up on shore, which I guess would remove growth.

Re: Porta Bote bottom paint

If you just pull it up on deck and tie it up when it is not in use, most growth spawn will die during the air time--it needs water to survive. If it comes up yucky, tip it over, and wipe it down. We occasionally spray our dinghy with bleach water to discourage fine, grassy growth, but it lives in the water, mostly. This kills the growth, and makes it easy to remove.

I’ve gotten growth on ours. A good hard wash and scrub does the trick. I think the hulls are some form of Polyethelyne. HDPE or MDPE (High or Medium density). Pretty slick stuff.
