Mounting horns on a sailboat?

I would like to mount a set of real horns to replace my "compressed air can" horn on my Baba 40. The problem I have is: where to mount them?

I had considered putting them on the bow rail, but that's a really long power run (~25 ft @ 8A) and I am not sure how much water over the bow they would take before being ripped off or ruined.

Do people use trumpet-style horns on their sailboats? If so, where do you put them? If not, what do you use?

thanks,
Dave

That's what first came to mind for me, too. At least your crew would be protected from an ear full.

Have you had a look at a Stebel Nautilus air horn? It's quite compact (I fitted it to my motorbike) and has lasted several UK winters with the associated road salt etc.

I had that same thought too, but alas my radar is not on the mast because I have no conduit down the front of the mast for the cable. The same would apply to the horns.

I hadn't seen the Stebel Nautilus air horn. It looks pretty nice, but I shudder to think of the cost of the cables to feed 18A all the way to the bow!

If you have separate windlass battery, use that to power the horn and use lighter gauge wire to operate a relay which will switch the horn?

I can imagine seeing that coming at me out on the Chesapeake; the Admiral would freak out! ;-)

Re: Mounting horns on a sailboat?

you can get a wireless button to activate the horn and avoid a majority of the wire run. Just make sure you wire it to a switch that you have on while you are underway.
look in the wireless doorbell section of Homey D
