Pole cost? Free, if it is on the boat
. Balance of cost? A hundred bucks for a heavy piece of plywood
and some u-bolts? Not elegant, but that's basically what steered Kon-Tiki, too.
I have a carbon-fibre pole from a project
that never happened and a couple scraps of marine plywood
under the vberth, drill, nuts, bolts, brackets, and line are always at hand... figured I would "MacGyver" the solution when needed. IMO raw materials are more adaptable and valuable than a finished product. It might be fun to experiment
with a build in calm conditions during our next cruise
