Lightest 15hp outboard?

Anyone have any ideas? I eventually got a new tender after ours was stolen, the little 2.3 honda is fine, for plodding along, but a 15hp would be nice, but how light are the lightest ones?

Re: Lightest 15hp outboard?

For 2-strokes, around 40kg and for 4-stroke around 50kg. There isn't much variation within each catagory, and most variation is due to differences like longer drive leg, electric start, etc.

I have a tohatsu 9.8 which only weighs 25kg. It is a 2 stroke and gets along fairly well. A 15hp will be around 40kg which is getting heavy.

Great little motor. Ran one for years, but it developed serious corrosion problems. A few others I know of did the same, but it only seemed to effect the occasional random motor. Bad batch of alloys? Don't know. Know others who have had no problems.

Mine is still siting in my workshop waiting for me to get sufficiently motivated to repair it....and the three other OB's on the rack next to it!

Re: Lightest 15hp outboard?

the tohatsu 9.8 was high on my list with my old rib which was rated for 10hp, but the new one can take up to 15hp, so far the yamaha at 36kg is the lightest 15hp, be a bit of a workout getting it on/off without a crane!

If you want four stroke, the new Suzuki Lean Burn and Battery -less Fuel Injected DF-15A short shaft manual start weighs in at 44kg/97bs

Selva make a 15 hp 2 stroke outboard with a weight of 30.5 for the short leg and 31.5 for the long leg, good motor

Re: Lightest 15hp outboard?

we like you had a 3.3 merc and that was just to small - we got a 5 merc that is 2 stroke and is about 50lbs and i do not need a crane to get it on board for passages or storage - it is very managable -
we have a 9' inflatable dink with an air vee keel and a wood floor and with 2 of us it moves along ok - with one i can get on plane but i did put wings or what ever you call them on the motor to get better thrust - we have gone a long way in that dink to explore reefs, coastlines ect - and getting it on shore is much easier than a bigger engine - and it is much easier to take apart and clean
it is also very fuel effecient

tohatsu looks like exactly the same motor and here in the carib you can also get 2 stroke

just our opinion and thoughts
