Is a new Mercury 9.9 2 stroke built by Tohatsu?

Hi,

I have inquired with a company on a new Tohatsu 9.8 two stroke. They offer me a new Mercury 9.9 two stroke instead.

As the Tohatsu has a very good reputation for being super robust and easy to fix I was wondering if the Mercury is technically the same. Rumours say Mercuries of that size are rebranded Tohatsu.

If the latter is the case, the Mercury would be just as good as the Tohatsu, no?

Background, we are cruising in areas where most people use two strokes so the mechanics are used to them and spares are easier to get.

The small 4 stroke Mercs are made by Tohatsu, but I'm not sure about the 2 strokes. The currently listed Merc 9.9 2 stroke I can find does weigh the same as the Tohatsu 9.8, but that doesn't necessarily mean it's the same engine.

Thanks.

Questioned about if they are the same the dealer came back to me with this answer:

"...
Mercury is a part owner and they are all built in same factory BUT Mercury outboards do differ and some parts do not match..."

He also said Mercury parts are easier to get than Tohatsu parts.

Hmmm.

I also looked into the Yamaha and it's 10kg heavier, so that one is out.

Waiting on the offer from a different Tohatsu dealer now.
