honda outboard kickback

bought a new 2.3 hp honda outboard and from the first day using it , it had a wicked pullback on the start rope. breaking of the hand type pullback. so called honda- 5 year warranty- and all and they said fined a local dealer. the dealer was very good, just a 5 day turnaround but gave me a bill for 140 bucks that i had to pay. they said motor was fine, no problems , the did a complete check up which was not under warranty. Still kicks like a mule sometimes and makes me hesitant approaching that thing. any one else have this? thxs!

Re: honda outboard kickback

I pull slowly on the rope until I feel increased resistance indicating piston is at start of compression stroke. Then let the rope retract and THEN pull rapidly to start, greatest resistance is felt immediately and no kick. A Honda dealer showed me this when I got my first small 4 stroke.

I've found pretty much the same trick to work (as suggested in the manual) on my single cylinder Tohatsu 4 stroke. Pull slowly and gently at first, then as soon as resistance builds, give it a firm, quick pull for the rest of the length of the cord. If you yank hard from the start it doesn't kick back, but sometimes you run into compression on the cylinder so fast/hard that the compression release doesn't help you and you pretty much get stopped dead (which is very rough on the shoulder).
