Help Identifying Windlass Manufacturer?
We just picked up this used windlass and I’d like to service it but find no identifying plate, no name, no numbers. Anyone able to help? Thank you.

Re: Help Identifying Windlass Manufacturer?
The SL-555 Sea Tiger is a manual windlass, not electric. The SL-1000 Sprint was a vertical electric.

Re: Help Identifying Windlass Manufacturer?
Hi - just in case it proves useful, I had an excellent service from this guy - John. Based in Scotland, UK, but I think he bought up all the old SL spares? He completely rebuilt my old SL Seawolf Windlass so it was better than new, at a fraction of the cost of a comparable new windlass. Obviously extra shipping costs from USA but may still be useful for you.

Re: Help Identifying Windlass Manufacturer?
I have a similar one, maybe identical that was frozen solid when I bought the boat. Pulled the main shaft out while still in the boat then removed the whole thing. Bearings were corroded to the point where we actually though it was a bushing, not a bearing. The 2 main bearings that bear the main shaft are highly susceptible to corrosion. The rest of the bearing looked pretty good. I bought all new bearings, they're cheap. Getting the corroded bearings out involved a very large bearing press. Cleaned it all up, repainted it and will reinstall it shortly. Easy job and from I've been told, when these don't work it's usually the bearings. My solenoid also went out. Replacing it with a dual direction one and installing a chain counter as well. Make anchoring from the helm much easier.

Re: Help Identifying Windlass Manufacturer?
It could be either an H-1000 or an H-1500, and the exterior is the same. With the label gone it would be very difficult to tell even with the case opened. The two used different motors and gears on the motors and IIRC the gear that engaged. Practically it probably doesn't matter unless you are needing to replace the motor with gear. It should work just fine as a bidirectional windlass: that is what I do.
The GRP covers can be removed from the central aluminum casting without dismounting the windlass, and I have always repaired it in place. Once open remove the bearings from the case with a blind bearing puller, available at Harbor Freight for about $35. Check the main shaft (that supports the drum and gypsy) for wear; the seals eventually wear and allow salt into the bearings, which in turn corrode and cause excessive wear on the shaft. Replacement shafts have been out of stock for a decade so take it to an automotive machine shop and have it brazed and turned instead, if needed. Use a good durable, non-separating grease like Superlube on reassembly.

Here is the parts explosion:

If you want the Owners Manual and can't find one online I can look for mine and scan it in - just let me know.

Re: Help Identifying Windlass Manufacturer?
While you have it off the deck consider buying a chain counter and installing the sensor and magnet. The casting has a recessed mounting place for the sensor (magnetic switch), with a hole underneath for the wiring that is plugged with silicone sealant (just push it out). The opposing side of the gypsy has an 8mm shallow hole drilled for the magnet. The parts included with the Quick chain counter fit exactly, including the screw pilot holes for the sensor mounting clamp. (Other counters may also fit, I just don't know.)
A chain counter, which includes remote up/down switches, is pure joy for setting the anchor without foredeck help, and also very useful for getting underway.

Our Pearson 386 is presently on the hard in Rogers City, Michigan (up by the middle finger of the mitten). We bought her last Fall just West if Cleveland and missed the window to get her home but we’ll start again in May. Love the Morgan 384. We had a contract on a 383 that failed a survey before we found our Pearson. Hope we cross wakes in Tarpon Springs!!
