Re: Gerry cans for gas, diesel and potable water

We use a shaker siphon to transfer fuel from jerry jugs to the tank. I’m able to set the fuel can near the tank fill, start the siphon and it pretty much does the rest. If I desire to get every oz of fuel out of the jerry jug I tilt the fuel can when it is near empty. Wipe the hose with a fuel diaper when done, not a drop spilled. We purchased ours at NAPA and it looks like the photo.

Tsuru,

I use the same siphon tube. Love it. Will never go back to pouring. Have a separate one for potable water.

Best siphon system so far, everyone in the Florida Keys with a power boat seems to have one. Almost as fast as a NASCAR pit crew, but safer and nearly spill proof. https://www.amazon.com/Mercury-Fuel-.../dp/B004QJMY78

For safety you really should consider carrying as little gas as possible.

Re: Gerry cans for gas, diesel and potable water

Scepter Inc is the company to be dealing with.

Problem is that you have been dealing with the "consumer division".

The "military division" of Scepter manufactures the MFC-20 20L / 5USG Military Fuel Can - in red, yellow, and blue.

The US military has purchased these jerricans since before the Gulf War.
.
The are designed for transport and do not ambient vent like the consumer cans.

They were designed for transport and are rated to 30 PSI pressure.

The US military stopped using the metal cans because they were notorious for leaking at the seams.

Problem is trying to find where you can purchase the MFC-20s.

Scepter is located in Scarborough, Ontario, Canada - Phone : 416-751-9445.

I use 12vdc diesel fuel pump to transfer fuel from yellow container to the fuel tank. No spills.

Re: Gerry cans for gas, diesel and potable water

This is off topic but I think important enough to mention. I had 4 yellow plastic 6 gal jerry cans I would strap to my stanchions with a strap with stainless buckle from west marine and another line as backup tied to the stanchions and wrapped around the handles. Worked great until one particularly sporty crossing of the gulf stream to the Bahamas. Our weather window timing was off and we were bashing into 6 to 8 ft waves with the odd 10 footer just for excitement. The boat handled the rough going well and so did the wife. Not so for the jerry cans. A wall of blue water hit the cans and knocked them over on the deck and that's were they stayed for rest of the crossing. Fortunately there was no damage to the stanchions. That is a lot of force. After that we would lash them down on the stern pushpit. Another solution might be to lash them to the mast.

Those EPA spouts do suck but you can buy replacements. This is the hose type I have used for years with minimal drippage: https://www.amazon.com/HORUSDY-Sipho...dDbGljaz10cnVl

DING DING DING winner!

Some of the new gasoline designs have a filter/flash preventer inside the neck. This can be an impediment for the syphon. “Some guys”inappropriately remove that blockage or cut a hole in it.

Re: Gerry cans for gas, diesel and potable water

I keep 2 jerry jugsof diesel in the cockpit locker. One of gasoline is in a suncover and tied oak strips lashed to the lower shrouds. It sits nicely between the cabin trunk and the shrouds, allows easy passage and is not quite so exposed. No room at my stern.

I am thinking of fabricating a fitted aluminum transom tank for the dink. Not sure where that will get stowed.

Re: Gerry cans for gas, diesel and potable water

I have Scepter gas, water, and diesel containers. They are all the same size and shape. I use the civilian version, as they are much less expensive than the military version. They are available either way, though, so it's your choice. Here's an example of the kind of water container that I have...
