Ensign vs Davits

Another thread inspired me to think about this.

My ensign staff is mounted in a socket clamped to one of the vertical parts of my pushpit.

Underway, the ensign itself gets tangled in the davits, and the leech (so to speak) of the ensign gets tattered from where it catches on things.

One year (or two), I flew the ensign from the backstay, hauling it up with a spare halyard. But this is not really good -- the backstay is sloped enough that the ensign looks silly unless there is a lot of wind.

What to do? I found myself fantasizing about a staff which could be put up the backstay, with a weight to hold it more upright. But that seems kind of Rube Goldberg.

Would be nice if I had a gaffer or a ketch and so had more places to put it

Any tips?

If this is your biggest quandary right now I salute you.

My suggestion; buy a smaller ensign or move the socket.

Ha, I only wish it were! My winter repair list runs to about six pages

This is a tiny, trivial, but irritating little problem.
