Another thread inspired me to think about this.
My ensign staff is mounted in a socket clamped to one of the vertical parts
of my pushpit.
Underway, the ensign itself gets tangled in the davits
, and the leech (so to speak) of the ensign gets tattered from where it catches on things.
One year (or two), I flew the ensign from the backstay, hauling it up with a spare halyard
. But this is not really good -- the backstay is sloped enough that the ensign looks silly unless there is a lot of wind
What to do? I found myself fantasizing about a staff which could be put up the backstay, with a weight to hold it more upright. But that seems kind of Rube Goldberg.
Would be nice if I had a gaffer or a ketch
and so had more places to put it
