While it's still strenuous to roll it, it's an order of magnitude easier then dragging. And damp sand makes a pretty good surface to roll on.
Initial cruising grounds are eastern caribbean and bahamas. Maybe put this project on the back burner then.

Re: Dinghy Wheels Do they really work?

Well I will say at my age even in soft sand, I could use a little help at times to get the darn dink up to something to chain it to !!! And in surfie conditions this set up would get ya on the beach way better then trying to Hit It just Right ! WSOOOPS been there done that not again I hope !!! just my 2 cents

Re: Dinghy Wheels Do they really work?

In more than 40 years of sailing the Chesapeake (home waters), the Eastern Caribbean ("home" for many years), and the East Coast from Maine to the Bahamas I've never felt the need for dingy wheels. You just don't need them.

That said, there's a pair of big-ass dingy wheels on my deck at the moment. Someone gave them to the cruising folks staying aboard my boat (in the air conditioning and this awful summer's heat). Dont' know the story, but if you're interested I'll investigate further.

I use these bad-boys.

Not great on soft sand, however on the other hand, you can put the wheels down and there's slightly less chance of your dinghy floating away when the water comes in.

Re: Dinghy Wheels Do they really work?

I've seen those alot, IMHO the wheels need to be bigger diameter for soft sand. However, they are less obtrusive!

I have to laugh at the phrase..."They look ridiculous". Sailing is not about looks. It's about what works. I have Davis inflatable wheels which I use on my Livingston 8' f/g dinghy. The big advantage is it protects the prop on launching from shore through the waves. The same is true for landing. I first used them in Hawaii, where sharp lava rock is a hazard. Close to landing, wheel down in 10 seconds. I quickly step out in 2 ft of water grab the bowline and lifting the bow up roll the tender up on the beach.

True enough... right up until the point when some five-year old asks why you need training wheels on your dink.

Re: Dinghy Wheels Do they really work?

I have these wheels on a luggage cart and they work great in soft deep sand. I bet you could buy the bigger ones and adapt for a dinghy. I can pull my luggage cart with a 50qt cooler (loaded), chairs, umbrellas, towels, etc with one hand. got to weigh in at 100lbs.

Beach Carts, Kayak Carts, Boat Dolly, Boat Dollies, Canoe Carts, Balloon Wheels, Beach Wheels, All-Terrain Wheelchairs and Wheeleez products- from Wheeleez, Inc.

Re: Dinghy Wheels Do they really work?

those smaller plastic wheels are good for basura. the good ones--danard that fill with as much air as you want t o keep in them--those are good--i know they work in sand. awesome wheels. have had 2 sets of those--sold each with the dink.
the plastic wheels shown do not allow dink to be lifted without still dragging tubes on sand.. the danard kind allow the dink to be lifted higher and rolled.
with a lightweight inflatable roll up kind--dont need wheels--2 can carry dink easily onto beach.

I would be hesitant to take style advice from a 5yr old.

Re: Dinghy Wheels Do they really work?

Here's a thought if you have the cash:

Get a Danard or Davis setup,

Wheel-a-Weigh for Boats (Extra Capacity) by Davis
Danard Marine Products - Dinghy Wheels

Replace the wheels with beach wheel from WheelEEZ
Beach Wheels, Polyurethane- from Wheeleez, Inc.

You would also need to replace the bolts that are the wheel axles.

Re: Dinghy Wheels Do they really work?

The problem with my Davis tires are the Chinese inner-tubes. They do not last long. Looking for better ones.

I don't know why you are all wasting your time arguing about this to be honest...

They are now 3-wheel drive.
