Dinghy Repair: large chafe hole

So my Hypalon dinghy managed to chafe a hole in itself(the Davits had a helping hand in it). The hole is about the diameter of a pencil, but surrounding the hole is exposed fabric, not the rubber. The rubber all chafed off in that area. I've patched holes before without issue, but this one I've patched twice so far without complete success. A bubble eventually forms under the patch where the hole is and then somehow expands and finds a way out via a slow leak out the edge of the patch.

Any advice?

Dinghy Repair: large chafe hole

Bigger patch, after throughly cleaning off the area of course.
You fill the fabric area with glue, let it dry to seal and then re- glue?

The second patch was probably a 4 inch radius larger than the hole. Rough surfaces, clean well, apply 3 layers of glue, letting each dry about 20 mins in between, then stick on patch and roll out well.

Always worked before. Not with this hole though....

Are you using a 2 part glue? Pro repair people sometimes use a sealant inside for problem leaks.

Just using single part glue sold as Hypalon repair glue.

I'm wondering if it's the exposed fabric that's causing the issue?

I have been. through the same issues as you have it seems the solution is the 2 part glue. what I have found is you pump the boat up Hard install The patch and then reduce the air pressure to allow the glue to cure

If you can source it, Rema Tip-top SC2000 two part glue is great for such repairs. This glue is designed for industrial rubber applications, like repairing or buillding huge conveyor belts used to load coal into ships here in Australia. Stronger bonds than even the OEM Bostic glues used in manufacturing inflatables. Only drawback that I am aware of is that you can't un-bond the joins by heating as you can with the Bostic.

Oh... it also has a good shelf life, unlike most of the glues sold for dinghy repair.

Re: Dinghy Repair: large chafe hole

It can be tough to patch Hypalon in a humid environment. PVC is so much easier to patch when working close to the water.
I'd try 2 part glue, the British stuff works great. Try patching away from the water, in a warm, low humidity place @70f.
-sand patch & surface.
-use MEK to clean patch/surface, not acetone.
- apply 2 light coats glue on surfaces. Dry between coats.
-clamp patch 24hrs before inflating.
-for a big hole, a patch on the inside might be needed too.

This was advice given to me by guys at Sal's inflatables in Alameda.

Is there a chance that Armor All has been used on the inflatable in the past? If so, that could be your problem. If so, try mixing up a slurry of Tide soap and dish washing soap, rub it on the area, and let it sit for a few hours. Then, really clean the area with acetone before re-gluing the patch.

Re: Dinghy Repair: large chafe hole

Any and all repairs on hypalon should be made with the two part adhesive. I've used Weaver, Stabond and Polymarine on my previous dinghy. They all hold well enough to install seat patches (oval pieces with webbing to install bench seats). That dink was 10 years old when I bought it, and a couple of the seat patches startet to detach, so I replaced all four.

BE CAREFUL using solvents, either Acetone or MEK, etc. I'm pretty sure I killed that old dink by making the mistake of using it for cleaning some badly stained areas at the bow (where there are a lot of seams...)

I believe the one part glues are meant as a temporary patch, for river rafters and the like that need it to hold for awhile until they can get home and make a permanent repair

Re: Dinghy Repair: large chafe hole

Has anyone have experience with 5200 to re-glue simple PVC floor on a small PVC Zodiac/West Marine or similar?

It is 12 years old. Looks new as only used one season 10 years ago. Bottom came unglued back then and was repaired with 2 part PVC glue, worked well and stored for years. Too many deflatables.
Last week I launched it for my grandson and part of pvc only floor came unglued.

I have heard of better success on old dingys with 5200.

Share your 5200 experience please.

Re: Dinghy Repair: large chafe hole

Cut two patches same size, preferably round, to cover chafe area plus some
Slice thru hull in centre of chafe with sharp knife. about 1/3 of width
coat both patches with glue,
fold one patch into a fan shape and push thru slice inside the hull,
spread this patch out until it covers the chafe area equally
put other patch on outside of hull and put a weight on top to hold together.
relieve pressure periodically to ensure that opposite sides of interior don't stick together

Re: Dinghy Repair: large chafe hole

Suggestion - it worked for me...
1. Find a plastic clothing button the size of your hole in the RIB.
2. Tie a piece of heavy-duty sunbrella thread to the button.
3. Cut a hypalon patch a bit larger than the hole you have.
4. Thread the end thru a needle and poke it thru the patch so the button is behind it so that the button will act like a washer to apply pressure from inside when you pull the string.
5. Put the button thru the hole in your RIB.
6. Then push the patch (on the thread with the button) into the hole.
7. Use a q-tip to spread hypalon glue on the patch inside the hole - generously.
8. Pull the thread and let the button pull the inside patch to the RIB skin...tie it off with tension - let it dry.
9. Next Day - cut a larger (outside) patch...scuff/clean the outside area to be patched.
10. Cut off the thread end.
10. Glue the outside patch onto the outer skin and (if possible) use compression to hold it in place (do not inflate the RIB)...let it dry and pump it up.

...worked for me...15 yr old Avon - going strong!

Re: Dinghy Repair: large chafe hole

I've been there and done that.......it's sounds like the glue.
You MUST use the two part hyperlon epoxy made for your material. it's very expensive stuff but nothing else will give you what you need. BTW, it may be kept refrigerated (in the separate tubes) for quit a while.
