protecting against scratches---that depends on how you store the engine ,and beeing carfull when manuvering?
I don't expect Norway makes a great benchmark for UV damage testing. Zero sunlight and so zero UV in winter in the north. I wonder if the summer sun makes up for it though I doubt it. The sun definately murders things in the tropics at double time.

Sometimes the cover can protect your artwork.

Re: Dinghy engine covers - what are they good for?

If you do decide to go with a motor cover, it is important to note where the air vent is for the engine cowl (normally intergrated into the rear handle lifting section of the cowl)
The reason this is important is that you have a cut out section in the cover here. If you dont the engine block will sweat and start corroding in short time.

Something else to consider in this regard is spraying the engine block etc under the cowl every couple of months and before winterisation with something like Spark (by Spaanjaard) as it has silicon in the Water displacement fluid that does not damage the engine hoses and other rubber parts and prevents corrosion of the engine block etc.
