Re: Dinghy Chaps - a good or bad idea?
A few thoughts
- It is the weight of wet Sunbrella should be calculated, not dry. Yes, saving 10 pounds or so, over the life of the dinghy, is probably worth the reduction in life expectancy to me.
- Unless sewing labor is pure joy, then it has a cost. Figure $700 at least, perhaps closer to that $1000. Most of us would be having them made, so the retail cost is the one we use.
- You could paint the tubes. No weight, no layers, but no abrasion protection.
- I used a cover when it was on davits, which also kept out rain, bird bombs, snow, and so forth. But, of course, It was not on all the time. Still, the Hypalon dinghy was 25 years old when I sold the boat.
- I don't care for the way they shift when I slide on and off. Personal.
- I suspect light colored chaps probably keep the tubes cooler, which matters on davits.
To me, there are two strong arguments for: protection from sharp stuff, if that is a big part of your life (it was not for me) and for PVC tubes (but I might paint them instead). I would get a Hypalon dinghy and skip the chaps.
