Dinghy Anti - Foul
What’s a good or best paint to anti foul a RIB?
I’m in the Bahamas now if that helps, but need a flexible paint I assume and one that is OK with extended periods of being out of water.
I’ll likely never store dinghy on deck or it would be rare to anyway.
Any suggestions?
Oh, aluminum hull.
I leave the dinghy in the water except when we are sailing and I’m gettin growth of course.

Re: Dinghy Anti - Foul
There are dink antifouling paints available however have you given thought to raising the dink at nite? A simple 3 sided strap with a SS ring in the middle is fairly easy to make up. We raise the dink with the spinnaker halyard every nite and use a cable to lock it to the boat. This does 2 things, it adds to the security of the dink and it ensures that you’ll never need anti fouling paint because nothing ever grows on it.

We haul it up on a halyard too. No growth.

Re: Dinghy Anti - Foul
Probably 20 years ago I was living onboard and commuting to work from a swing mooring, so the dinghy was tied to a pontoon all day, every day and I had the same problem.
The dinghy was a soft bottom Achilles, not a RIB, but I was still able to antifoul the bottom and lower tubes with regular antifouling paint, nothing special. I don't think I chose self-ablating and the paint stayed there until the dinghy reached the end of its natural life.
There might have been some cracking and chipping but it can't have been serious because I would have remembered.

Re: Dinghy Anti - Foul
I used regular west marine on my mercury inflatable dinghy for several summers and it did just fine.

Re: Dinghy Anti - Foul
Make sure its water based. In 2001 we got some generic anti foul and painted the dink, the next morning we had a RIB Kit. The solvents dissolved all the glued seams.

International (AzkoNobel) Paint’s “Trilux”, and Interlux's “Trilux 33", have been specifically developed for use on primed aluminum.

Re: Dinghy Anti - Foul
consider how and what your dink drags on when raising and lowering before painting the bottom or you are going to put that paint on the stern of the boat
I just go into the water and clean the dink bottom

Re: Dinghy Anti - Foul
Just a warning, i used the total boat brand inflatable paint on my fiberglass/hypalon RIB. It kept the growth down but when upside down on deck there were some very nasty orange streaks the leached from the paint and stained the tubes and the deck. I sold that dinghy.
With the new one I normally leave my dinghy in the water but now about every two weeks I take it to the beach, take the engine off, flip it over and scrub the bottom.

It doesn’t touch anything, and cleaning it is getting tough.
What do you use to scrub the Hypalon with, that won’t damage it?
I know about hoisting it, it’s frankly a whole lot easier to lock it to the boat and leave it in the water.
Hoisting in the davits is a pain, unless fully hoisted it will swing in high winds and waves.
I’d rather anti foul it as opposed to hoisting every night.
Growth I’m gettin looks like algae, no hard growth yet.
I have considered using an acid to try to clean the hypalon, surely abrasive cleaning will damage it over time?
My only concern really is the tubes, the aluminum hull I know I can go after it aggressively with a scotchbrite pad and it will clean up.

Dinghy Anti - Foul
It’s nowhere near the scraper stage yet.
You use a green pad on the tubes?
I’m going to try to knock up a sling that will attach to my existing sling I use for the davits that is made from SS wire and crimped.
I’m going to give the hoist it from the spare Halyard trick a try, Although I’ve never yet seen that done, so it’s not nearly as popular as many suggest.
I need to try to figure out where the CG of the dinghy is to hoist it from one line though, I guess trial and error.

Vivid by Pettit.
Hits all you major points and safe for aluminum. Can be hauled/relaunched w/o loss of protection. Is ablative so it doesn't build up, downside is it rubs off a little if you bring it up on deck and brush against it.

I do. I don't try to really get it "clean" just less dirty (both on top and bottom)
