Depth Finders

I would like to buy a depth finder, for a 12' dinghy, as a gift. I over heard the recipient say he would prefer a portable one. Any recommendations?

Thanks in advance.

Re: Depth Finders

Portable?

We have the Deeper Pro+ and like it very much.
(the higher priced Deeper Pro Chirp even better, plus it can output NMEA0183 by wifi - unadvertised)

Both makes great bathymetric maps.

But it is portable, not fixed gps.

Re: Depth Finders

I have had the Vexilar Sonarphone SP300 for several years and have been pleased with it. It has its own battery, but no display -- it connects to your smartphone using WiFi.

Re: Depth Finders

I'll look up all of your suggestions. Hopefully I will get what he was talking about, and he will not have to return for the correct unit.

Thank Y'all for your quick responses.

His dinghy is measured in feet, so it's perfect.

Vexilar Lps-1 Handheld. We’ve found it to be very useful.

There should be DIP switches under the cap that allow you to change to meters.

Thanks in advance.

Is it a rib? Only reason to know if you could glue on a transducer to the hull (inside a locker) vs. an external mounted one. IMO the internally glued on transducer is superior.
We have a internal mounted transducer on the hull in our hard nesting dinghy and never have to worry about it falling off/breaking like an external. Another thing to check if it is a rib that the hull is solid f/g to make the glued on transducer work.
Ours is just an old Hummingbird that is powered by a solar battery, but works well. Very easy to see the readings to check around the boat while rowing or when we hook up the OB at WOT.

Sorry Jammer, I don't know what this means. What is RoHS?

I didn't see the OP asking to meet any particular standard.
