Re: Boarding a RIB from the water

I have one of these http://www.dicksdinghyladders.com.au
It is the only way that my partner can get into the dinghy after snorkelling it fits snuggly without moving, folds compact & has the extra handle further into the dinghy that makes all the difference.
A bit more expensive but a top piece of kit.
Have tried rope ladders loops of webbing but all to hard if you have been snorkeling for an hour or so. We do it for fun not hard work.

Something like this should help. You can make the lines as long as you need them.

Re: Boarding a RIB from the water

We’re scuba divers. And if we’re not diving we’re snorkeling. So we’ve always got fins with us. A swift kick of the fins is all we need.
But, I’ve also tied a 6’ line to each of the transom lifting eye bolts. We drop these in thhe water when we’re diving. Before we get in the water, we setup our gear, drop it in the water, and tie it to the line so we know where it is.
I’ve always figured I could tie those lines into a rope ladder if needed.
Hope this helps. I always like 2 birds killed with one stone.

Re: Boarding a RIB from the water

I don't think there is one perfect ladder that fits every rib and every application.

Scuba divers can be in rough conditions diving the outside of a pass or reef so the transom of the rib with a pitching prop is a bit dangerous.
I agree lots of cuts can happen when clambering over the outboard.

There is also the safe "landing" area inside to consider when in rough conditions.

On one boat our RIB had a bow ladder and the anchor rode was transfered to a transome strong point, so the bow became the lee and divers boarded over the bow into an empty space

Re: Boarding a RIB from the water

I second Neophyte’s suggestion on the West Marine stainless steel ladder. I would die without it! About $150 and well worth every penny. Rope ladders are useless because they go under the boat. Guests on board are much happier when they see they won’t have to make a fool of themselves getting back in the dinghy!

Deblen very good video and I have tried it too just need to practice a few times to perfect your technique. Cannot get much simpler.

Re: Boarding a RIB from the water

Love the back flip idea. Will try next time we are snorkeling off dinghy. That said, we made a ladder with line loops and a couple of king starboard steps. As noted, it tends to want to go under the dinghy when we step on it. To counter that motion, we strung a line across the dinghy from a handle on the side oopposite the step. Pulling up & across the boat on the line while stepping on the boarding step does the trick.
