2005 Viking Life worth saving?

Manufactured in 05
Last service in 2010
Next service in 2013

Can it be serviced again? Is it worth keeping if not?

It should be servicable. I have heard that many raft manufacturers recommend that the raft be replaced at 15 years after date of manufacture, so you could have at least 3 years more use.

One way the raft is serviced is to "blow" it up, using nitrogen, which can in itself create problems. We just went through this on a used life raft, and after considering the costs to repair and replace the necessary parts, buying a new one ended up being of comparable costs. Plus a certain peace of mind that I could consider "priceless". My husband called it planned obsolescence!

At that age and lack of servicing you will probably need expensive parts in the service, like valves or a tank. A service shop should give you a verbal guide or maybe inspect fo free and quote. They will probably hope you will just say chuck it after they say what it costs and if you don't then they will not re-pack it. They will keep it then. It's a frustrating business tied up by regulation and liability fears and restrictive business practices. There is so much waste. It does my head in.

I bet the cost is close to that of a new one and if you service an old one, then to stay legal you need to service annually, so by sticking with it you are committing to a couple more services. A new one goes 3 years between services (unless Solas rated). So, probably get a new one.

The plain fact is that no one here knows a thing about the serviceability of your raft. Thats why they get inspected by qualified shops, hands on.

Re: 2005 Viking Life worth saving?

I just had a 4-man Viking raft serviced in New Zealand. The cost was nsd$1,600 or about usd$1,120. I only paid around usd$2,300 for the thing new. I'd get an estimate from a local servicing agent and make a call from there. The agent here was within a couple of hundred of his estimate.
