2-stroke o'board problem

Cannot seperate lower gear unit from mid-section. Bought and read the service manual before starting project. Stumped. Any ideas?

Background: Nissan 9.9C 2-stroke. S/N 355A-1-66928. Year unknown {help?} but suspect 1993-1995.

Disconnected xmission linkage twixt lower and middle section. Removed four nuts & lockwashers that APPEAR to be only items holding both units together. Struggle, grunt and tried small mallet. Units won't come apart. Suspect old, dried-up "grease" now keeping units bound with friction, but don't know that for sure. Am I missing something? What?

Tried using small flat-tip and mallet along joining line to pry parts apart. Tried liberally coating that area with penetrating oil.

(days later) Hung the unit upside-down and liberally coated bolts with penetrating oil. (So gravity would assist penetration.)

My motor looks like a tuna hung from the boom. Next step: hacksaw.

ANY ideas out there?

Re: 2-stroke o'board problem

took me a week to free the drive on a similar engine, drive rod corroded into splined output of big end bearing, repeated heating, hitting leg with 5lb hammer freed it.

blowtorch and sae 50 oil did the trick, plus the big hammer..............

Thanks, atoll.

Have Bernzomatic tourch-will fry her butt.

More info: Motor functioned pretty well on the dinghy around the harbour before I pulled her aboard. Reason(s) she's up are 1) almost no water out the tell-tale and 2) running raggedy. Bought a water pump rebuild kit and carb rebuild kit. And yes, I know about checking for salt build-up in the water cooling system. Just thought that after seven years I should really check the impellor.

just try to expose the big end joint and heat with plenty of oil,tip get it bubbling then tap the leg. will free it self eventually, use a block of wood against the alloy

Re: 2-stroke o'board problem

that's a common problem when the lower end goes too long without being removed. Patience plus persistence!
