2 stroke 15 HP Yamaha throttle cable issue

2002 15 HP Yamaha 2 stroke.

This morning, took the dinghy ashore, everything fine. Started on the first pull, able to go full throttle.

Get back to the dinghy to return to the boat, and the throttle will only turn to 1/2. I pulled the cover, looked at the link age at the throttle, checked in the arm. I can't see what is preventing the throttle twist grip from turning all the way.
What can I look for?

A twist handle that then pulls a cable is dependent on well greased wedges sliding by each other. That is one problem, and requires disassembly of the handle. Second is the cable itself. Guessing you have a few years on that motor, a frayed cable could be the source. A rusted cable with no oil is another. So, take it.apart. you will find the problem.

Do a you tube search on the handle tear down. I saw a couple good ones.

Re: 2 stroke 15 HP Yamaha throttle cable issue

I found the issue. It only went to 1/2 throttle due to the mechanism that prevents full throttle when in neutral.
A part of the linkage connecting the gear selection to the throttle linkage came loose.
A search online provided the clue.

Then it was 45 minutes actually finding it on my engine, figuring out how it was supposed to connect, and then trying to get it back together when I could barely sort of reach it with a screwdriver and needle nose pliers.

But it’s running again! And when I first lifted the cowling I found a loose nut laying inside that holds the fuel filter. So that was another plus.

Congratulations. You'll be more ready to tackle similar problems in the future.
